There are more young people in the world today than ever before. Yet surprisingly little is known about the current state of affairs in youth development. Measuring the well-being of young people continues to be a challenge, even though its importance is widely recognised. The Commonwealth's youth flagship report, the Global Youth Development Index and Report, provides an evidence-based overview of the state of development for the nearly 1.8 billion young people between the ages of 15 and 30 in the world. The Youth Development Index (YDI) is a composite index of 18 indicators that collectively measure progress on youth development in 183 countries, including 49 of the 53 Commonwealth countries. The YDI has five domains, measuring levels of education, health and well-being, employment and opportunity, political participation and civic participation among young people.

After-school programs, scout groups, community service activities, religious youth groups, and other community-based activities have long been thought to play a key role in the lives of adolescents. But what do we know about the role of such programs for today's adolescents? How can we ensure that programs are designed to successfully meet young people's developmental needs and help them become healthy, happy, and productive adults? The World Youth Report: Youth and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a biennial flagship report prepared by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, examines the mutually supportive roles of the new agenda and youth development efforts. This Report provides insight into the role of young people in sustainable development in the context of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and related frameworks, including the World Programme of Action for Youth (WPAY) and considers the role the 2030 Agenda can play in enhancing youth development efforts including how evidence-based youth policies can help accelerate youth-related objectives. The Report includes an annex with youth-related data at global and regional levels for SDG indicators as well as WPAY indicators.

On January 25, 1996, the Committee on Youth Development of the Board on Children, Youth, and Families convened a workshop to examine the implications of research on social settings for the design and evaluation of programs that serve youth. The January workshop provided an opportunity for the committee to examine the strengths and limitations of existing research on interactions between social settings and adolescent development. This research has drawn attention to the importance of understanding how, when, and where adolescents interact with their families, peers, and unrelated adults in settings such as home, school, places of work, and recreational sites. This workshop builds on previous work of the National Research Council and reiterates its support for integrating studies of social settings into more traditional research on individual characteristics, family functioning, and peer relationships in seeking to describe and explain adolescent behavior and youth outcomes. Not only does this report examine the strengths and limitations of research on social settings and adolescence and identify important research questions that deserve further study in developing this field, but it also explores alternative methods by which the findings of research on social settings could be better integrated into the development of youth programs and services. Specific themes include the impact of social settings on differences in developmental pathways, role expectations, and youth identity and decision-making skills, as well as factors that contribute to variations in community context.
