Excerpt from Yesterday and Today in Arkansas Many ages before such a being as the man of the present order had ever been dreamed of, even before his hairy ancestors swung in the tree-tops or kept watch for enemies from their cave homes, the wonderful coal deposits, ore-bearing rocks, fertile valleys and rich, black swamp lands of Arkansas were in process of making. The strange creatures that lived when the giant ferns which are now dug up as coal, were waving their tree-high fronds in the hot, damp air, have long since given place to the present-day species, and the storms and floods of the glacial period, which prepared the face of the earth for the habitation of man, are remembered only by the scars they left on the rocks, and the remains of prehistoric animals that are found in the caves where they were made prisoners by the deadly advance of ice and snow. By the record of rocks and bones, Nature has been a long time fitting Arkansas for the habitation of mankind, and the riches of her stores of coal and ore, of pearls and diamonds, of soil and sunshine, challenges the attention of the world. The Yesterday of Arkansas has been a long and busy ume of preparation; her Today is full of promise, .and the fullness of her Tomorrow is assured. Excerpt from Down in Arkansas Each claimed credit for the road's existence. It was pretty hard to tell, just then, who did own it and it has been somewhat of a conundrum ever since. There was no one present to speak for the Dutch bond holders, though they had a sympathetic listener, whose abused mind wandered away to the foggy shores of Holland, and was lost in visions of bottles and bar rels and bung-holes. Excerpt from The Aftermath of the Civil War, in Arkansas For over thirty years I have contemplated writing a history of Reconstruction in Arkansas. Having relinquished all political and business activities, I have, in my eighty-second year, completed this volume of memoirs. My work gives an account of my administration as Governor; also of those events that commenced before and entered into it, and those that occurred during that period and continued beyond it. It closes with a brief comparison between my administration and that of the opposition, which followed. I am not regardless of the fact that I have outlived the most of those to whom I have referred in these memoirs and that the criticism may be made that I have waited until their death to make charges that they can no longer answer. I beg that the reader will keep constantly in mind that I am writing of the official acts of my contemporaries and not of their personal characters. In view of my well-known Republican proclivities, extending over a period of forty-seven years, I have been fully aware of the necessity of substantiating every controvertible and important assertion. In preparing this work for the public I have gathered an immense amount of documentary evidence, from which I have selected the most appropriate for that purpose, and have embodied it either in whole or in part, or have cited the reader to where it can be found. Excerpt from Pioneers and Makers of Arkansas The aim of this book will be as Macaulay expressed it to make the past present, to bring the present near, to invest with the reality of human flesh and blood beings whom we are too much inclined to consider as personified qualities, rather than to rob history of its human element by a cataloguing of facts without effort to read their meaning. With Lord Acton, the sanest historic authority, we believe that History is the con science oi mankind, and have therefore set out thousands of facts as a potent influence in showing what the pioneers really did - their modus operandi - their hopes, joys and sorrows, asparts of an experience we are interested to know and from which we may one and all draw general lessons of moral and political wisdom.
