Excerpt from Worcestershire Place Names Nearly all English place-names have their root in anglo-saxon the principal exceptions are rivers and hills, which frequently maintain their earlier names (especially large rivers), and then their construction is almost hopeless. On the west side of Severn a few names appear to be of Welsh origin (e. G. Malvern, Mathon, Pendock, Pensax, and should therefore be dealt with by a Welsh scholar. Before commencing my work I was of opinion that the Norsemen had left no permanent traces of their invasions in Worcestershire but I now think it pretty clear they made a settlement in the neighbourhood of Clent and Hagley, probably on one of their raids up Severn. The same thing happened in North Staffordshire, where several place-names and words are clearly of Danish origin. The anglo-saxons appear to have been a homely race, for their place-names have the simplest origins, very different to the Welsh, Irish, and Scotch, whose names largely savour of poetry, sentiment, and history. Excerpt from Origin of the Names of the Towns in Worcester County Blackstone - William Blackstone, an Episcopal minister, was the first white settler in Boston, where he built a cabin in 1625-6, and where he was found by Gov. Winthrop in 1630. Blackstone afterwards moved to Rhode Island and settled on the bank of the river a few miles above Providence, at what is now called Cumberland. The river soon acquired the name of the Blackstone river. The town of Blackstone was taken from Mendon and incorporated in 1845. For some time previous to its incorporation the settlement was called Blackstone, this name being naturally suggested by the location of the village on the river of that name. The name itself naturally suggests its meaning, but how it originated is a matter of pure speculation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Warwickshire Place Names In introducing "Warwickshire Place Names' I have little to add to the prefaces to my earlier works on Staffordshire and Worcestershire names. I have used Dugdale's Antiquities of Warwickshire for a foundation, as containing the best account of the county in his day (1656); but many places, some noticed by him as then depopulated, have now disappeared from maps and directories. I have endeavoured to deal with all places, however small, having a history and supplying the necessary forms. In tracing them I have been able to identify several Domesday manors apparently unrecognized by Dugdale, or Reader (Warwickshire Domesday, 1835). Only six now remain unknown, viz. Altone, Ermendone, Leth, Rincele, Surland, and Ulware. I have found Dugdale very serviceable in the supply of forms, which he is careful to give in their old garb. He tells us that he spent twenty years in searching public and private records for material. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Index to Dr. Nash's Collections for a History of Worcestershire, Vol. 1: Names of Persons Names occurring more than once on the same page appear only once in the Index. They are spelled as found in the text. Italic letters after a number denote unpaged insertions after the page of the number. The insertions are chiefly sheet pedigrees or en gravings. Be denotes a pedigree taking both sides of an unpaged opening. Roman numerals in brackets are insertions so paged after the page of the number. If these are followed by unpaged sheets these are denoted as usual by italic letters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
