Though the negative effects of social exclusion are well documented, there is a paucity of research on women's experiences of social exclusion as they relate to mothering within the institution of motherhood. Social exclusion is one of the most pressing challenges in post-industrial societies, encompassing economic, social, cultural and political dimensions.
