Akelo volunteers at the church food bank, homeless shelters, and community events where the homeless are the targeted audience. She is a member of the Lion's Club, and volunteers with Embrace Life and Embrace Grace and Youth For Christ/Juvenile Justice Ministry. Akelo was a paraeducator for about four years, until January 2023. She worked with veterans as a Veteran Service Officer, she retired from the Army as an HRM, Sergeant First Class (2012), and she worked with a non-profit as a case worker and manager for three years with an emphasis on homeless veterans, employment, and housing. Akelo has two beautiful daughters; one is an accounting manager for the school district and the other is a soldier for the US Army.
