To assist parents and educators in preparing students for the 21st century, Wisconsin citizens have become involved in the development of challenging academic standards in 12 curricular areas. Having clear standards for students and teachers makes it possible to develop rigorous local curricula and valid, reliable assessments. This model of academic standards is for the area of music. The introduction defines the academic standards, explains how they were developed, suggests how to use the standards, and how to apply them across the curriculum. An overview of music is divided into the following sections: performance (singing; instrumental); creativity (improvisation; composition); literacy (notation); response (analysis; evaluation); and connections (the arts; history and culture). Publisher description: This text helps lead both students and teachers to a deeper understanding of the music they encounter. This teaching model, developed by the Wisconsin Comprehensive Musicianship Project (CMP), invites music educators, both vetran and novice, to create meaningful, comprehensive lesson plans with the help of five basic points: Analysis, Outcomes, Strategies, Assessment, and Music selection. These points lead to a greater understanding of the music performed while helping teachers provide accountability through creative assessment strategies, program concerts that teach musical and historical concepts, encourage cross-curricular application of music education, and meet National Standards.

The content and achievement standards for music in the K-12 school system contained in National Standards for Arts Education (1996) have quickly become accepted as the basis for most state and local music standards and frameworks. They provide a common foundation for music curricula throughout the nation. These national standards for music give the music teacher considerable freedom of choice not only in selecting learning materials and teaching strategies, but also in setting the performance standards by which student achievement is assessed. To meet the needs of all students with disabilities, Alternate Performance Indicators (API's) should be available for music teachers to plan an appropriate music program which supports the individualized educational plans of their students. This project will provide the reader with sample API's. Recent [state and federal] legislation charges all schools with the responsibility of providing suitable learning environments and qualified teachers capable of implementing a music education curriculum for nondisabled learners as well as learners with disabilities. Music is especially important for students with disabilities, while it has its own unique body of knowledge and skills, it can also be an effective vehicle to enhance learning in other areas of the curriculum.
