What if you could live forever? The Fountainis an odyssey about a man's thousand-year struggle to save the woman he loves. In three separate lives-Tomas the conquistador, Tommy the scientist, and Tom the explorer-Thomas is driven to discover the mysteries of life; all three stories converge into one truth as he comes to terms with life, death, love, and rebirth. The book is an extension of Aronofsky's cinematic vision, and will contain production stills of the film's stars Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz, original script, original art, and observations from creators Ari Handel and Darren Aronofsky. Edited by Darren Aronofsky,The Fountainis not so much a tie-in or a behind-the-scenes look at the film, but rather a thoughtful meditation on the film's provocative themes of life and death and its singular visuals.

Fountain Lindsey runs a charter boat business on the Florida Gulf coast. His business is good but something craws in Fountain's stomach, something that is a gnawing need to do something better with his life. To sail may be the answer. Not just a Sunday afternoon outing, but a real sail. The weather, people he knows, and good sense tells him to stay in. The boat stored on his dock is too old; he is a fisherman, not a sailor. But the need is established and he has to go. And, if he is going, he is going to make it big. He is going to forget what is sane and proper and go around the world. And he is going all the way on the boat, Fountain's Glory.

Francesco, a 12-year old apprentice stonemason leaves his small village to go to Rome in 1748. He works on the Trevi Fountain with his uncle, who designed it, and some other young apprentices. His errands and work take him all over this city of confusing streets and alleys. Francesco's adventurous spirit and his common sense help him to navigate and understand Rome. While Francesco and the other apprentices are fictional characters, his uncle, Nicola Salvi and the other architects and sculptors are real historical figures. Under the guidance of these men, Francesco learns how to inspect marble and how to carve sculptural details. He learns about aqueducts and fountains and solves the mystery of the stolen water. When Rome is flooded in 1750 he helps save the Trevi Fountain. The death of his beloved uncle forces him to leave Rome, but not until he fulfills his promise to finish his work on the fountain.
