This volume is the product of a conference on the theme 'Development - the Next Twenty-five Years' which the Institute of Social Studies held in Decem ber 1977 to mark its own twenty-fifth anniversaryas a centre of development studies. We felt it appropriate at that point in time to caU together specialists from all over the world in an attempt to assess the 'state of play' in our field as we move into the last quarter of the twentieth century. 1 For several days, therefore, the Institute's new building house d a remarkable concentration of knowledge and experience concerning the problems of the so-calle d less developed countries, drawn from all over the world. Although it was inevitable that the participants should represent the past (and it was several times re marked that, in that sense, there were too few women present), the earnest and sometimes heated discussions looked to the future as much as to what had happened in the last twenty-five years. As the discussions proceeded, three things became apparent. Firstly , although the papers submitted did not fully reveal it, the ongoing debate between radicals and moderates, those who saw possibilities of change only basically through a direct break with existing structures and those who felt change possibIe within them, is by no means at an end.

Smoking, drinking alcohol, and unhealthy eating are all wrong choices. Supposedly, each cigarette takes one hour off your life expectancy and has been proven to be an extremely high cause of cancer. Eating to satisfy your taste with sweets is not healthy for your body, and the fact that over 50 percent of the American population is overweight is good proof of this. Alcohol destroys your liver. If you want to live a long and healthy life then you need to take control. When you are young, you think you are invincible and nothing can bother or harm you. When you get older, you wonder if all the crazy things you did were worth it. Life only passes you by one time so make it a good and healthy life. You need to be responsible for your own health. Never give up on turning your health around. A journey of a thousand miles begins with just one step. Martin Dickson once confided to Stuart Cary Welch "that twenty five years would pass before our fellow specialists would fully comprehend what we had achieved." The "achievement" he was referring to is the monumental double volume The Houghton Shahnama (1981), still ill-understood thirty five years later. Their "achievement" is a treasure trove of information that needs to be rediscovered and reused. Three recent papers that tried to discredit Dickson and Welch provided the impetus to revisit some of the complex manuscripts that they had analyzed, including the British Library Khamseh (O. 2265) and the Cartier Divan of Hafez, to discover historical details that provide a better insight into Safavid society.
