Pica is a compulsive eating disorder in which people eat nonfood items. · Most common items eaten: § Dirt, § Clay, and § Flaking paint. · Less common items include: § Glue, § Hair, § Cigarette ashes, and § Feces. Health professionals need to test for a range of different conditions, including mental health conditions, to try to determine the probable cause. · Pica often develops in people with mental health conditions, but not all people with pica have a mental health condition. The disorder is more common in children, affecting 10% to 30% of young children ages 1 to 6. It can also occur in children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
