On 23rd June 2016, the United Kingdom shocked the world by voting to leave the European Union. This short book examines why this happened, examining the historical, economic, political, social and cultural reasons that led to the Brexit vote.

"On 6 October 2016 the Advisory Council on International Affairs (AIV) received a request for an advisory report on what the shape of the Netherlands' future relationship with the United Kingdom (UK) should be following the referendum in the UK on 23 June 2016, in which a majority of 51.9% of the British electorate who voted chose the option of leaving the EU. In its request for advice, the government stated that it was disappointed with the result but that it respected the outcome.
