The Westside Purple Line Extension Section 3 Stations is the third and final extension of the overall Westside Purple Line Extension. The Project extends the heavy rail subway system from the future Century City/Constellation Station approximately 2.56 miles west beneath the City of Los Angeles, Caltrans (I-405), Los Angeles County and VA Hospital properties ... The Westwood/UCLA station box will be located under Wilshire Blvd between Veteran Ave and Westwood Blvd ... The Westwood / VA Hospital station box construction and related work will impact existing fine arts murals known collectively as the National Veterans Mural. These murals have been identified as a historic resource, and as such must be treated with care and protected during construction. This report presents a description of the murals, documentation of existing conditions, a description of construction impacts, and recommendations for protection of existing murals to remain.

Item is a collection of photographs that document the various murals near the VA Greater Healthcare System complex near the future site of a Purple Line subway station.

Section 1 of the Westside Purple Line Extension Project is the first of three sections to be designed and constructed as part of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) Measure R Program. The program was approved by Los Angeles County voters in November 2008 and provides a half-cent sales tax to finance new transportation projects. In April 2012, the three sections of the Project were environmentally cleared and adopted by LACMTA Board of Directors. Section 1 will extend the existing Purple Line by 3.92 miles beginning at the Wilshire/Western Station. From this station, the twin tunnel alignment will travel westerly within the existing Wilshire Boulevard right-of-way. Stations will be located at the intersections of Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, and Wilshire/La Cienega. All three of the station boxes will be located within the Wilshire Boulevard right-of-way with station portals extending to off-street entrances. Two of the stations, Wilshire/La Brea and Wilshire/Fairfax are within the jurisdiction of the City of Los Angeles. The Wilshire/La Cienega Station is within the City of Beverly Hills jurisdiction.

Though the tunneling industry continues to develop both technically and contractually, one notable adaptation of the last two years has been the onset and management of COVID-19. The hallmarks of tunneling professionals include adaptability, resiliency, optimism, and management of change. These are traits that have been recently put to an entirely new challenge over the last year or so. We have truly witnessed why what we do is deemed “essential” infrastructure. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted each of us, personally and professionally, and while times have been hard, we are fortunate to work in a field that is able to meet the challenge and thrive thereafter. Congratulations are in order to everyone in our industry for keeping the planning and development of projects moving forward and for maintaining safe and productive worksites in these challenging times.

It brings together the expertise of World Bank staff and the input of numerous specialists to synthesize international 'good practices' and recommendations that are independent of commercial, financial political, or other interests. The material presented is intended as an honest-broker guide to maximize the impact and manage the challenges of urban rail systems in cities in both developed and developing countries. Rather than identify a single approach, this Handbook acknowledges the complexities and context necessary when approaching an urban rail development by helping to prepare decision makers to ask the right questions, consider the key issues, perform the necessary studies, apply adequate tools, and learn from international good practice all at the right time in the project development process.
