Excerpt from Water Waves Produced by Explosions In our analysis we assume that the surface elevation n and the accompanying water motion, are symmetric about an axis through the center of the disturbance. If r denotes distance from this axis and t denotes time then we may write n We also assume that the water is of finite uniform depth, which we denote by h and that the linear theory of surface waves is applicable. Both of these assumptions will be analysed in a later report. In the next two sections we present and discuss the results of our analyses for the cases of initial impulse and initial displacement respectively. Typical graphs of the wave height as a function of r and of t are included. Then in section IV these resulte are applied to the problem of wave production by explosions. The mathematical analysis is contained in an appendix. A list of references to previous work on this subject is appended. Of the previous work the earliest, that of Poisson is the most relevant. However he considers water of infinite depth. Furthermore he obtains detailed results only for paraboloidal and ellipsoidal depressions. Burnside [h] also considers infinite depth, but only twodimensional motion. He obtains a series for the wave motion produced by an initial elevation of very spe01al shape. Kranzer and Keller investigate the complex phenomenon of water waves produced by underwater explosions. Through careful experimentation and data analysis, they develop a comprehensive understanding of the physics at play in this fascinating area of study. Their work provides valuable insight for scientists and engineers interested in understanding the behavior of fluids under extreme conditions. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. In the course of developing the capability of predicting the characteristics of water waves generated by explosions detonated in shallow water beneath the ocean floor, the pertinent data from past experiments were analysed using dimensional analysis as a framework. Data were examined from one series of high explosive cratering experiments detonated beneath the floor in shallow water, and from two series of high explosive experiments and one nuclear explosive experiment detonated above the floor in shallow water. The data indicate that the maximum radius of the water column produced by the explosion is proportional to the cube root of the ratio of explosive yield to ambient pressure at the point of detonation. Further, the data show that the maximum radius of the column of water is proportional to the square root of the product of wave height and distance from the source. The conclusions of this scheme of analysis are being tested with hydrodynamic computer code calculations.

This is the first book on explosion-generated water waves. It presents the theoretical foundations and experimental results of the generation and propagation of impulsively generated waves resulting from underwater explosions. Many of the theories and concepts presented herein are applicable to other types of water waves, in particular, tsunamis and waves generated by the fall of a meteorite. Linear and nonlinear theories, as well as experimental calibrations, are presented for cases of deep and shallow water explosions. Propagation of transient waves on dissipative, nonuniform bathymetries together with laboratory simulations are analyzed and discussed.
