This book contains the results and findings of the advanced research carried out in a pilot area with a thorough investigation of the structure and functioning of an aquifer in a granitic formation. This volume offers twenty-four papers on subjects such as: groundwater potential assessment through the application of GIS; geophysical methods and remote sensing techniques; groundwater pollution and its remediation measures; aquifer characterisation of continuum and fracture media; modelling of groundwater flow and mass transport; and community based groundwater resources management.

Current manuals and technical books on ground water hydrology contain relatively little specific information on ground water in hard rocks areas, that is mainly igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Precambrian shield areas. This work is intented to fill this gap and to inform of the possibilities of finding and developing water resources in hard rocks areas

Arid and semi-arid regions are defined as areas where water is at its most scarce. The hydrological regime in these areas is extreme and highly variable, and they face great pressures to deliver and manage freshwater resources. However, there is no guidance on the decision support tools that are needed to underpin flood and water resource management in arid areas. UNESCO initiated the Global network for Water and Development Information for arid lands (GWADI), and arranged a workshop of the world's leading experts to discuss these issues. This book presents chapters from contributors to the workshop, and includes case studies from the world's major arid regions to demonstrate model applications, and web links to tutorials and state-of-the-art modelling software.
