Water Purification in the EEC: A State-of-the-Art Review discusses the results of a survey carried out under the terms of a one year contract (commencing November 1, 1974) awarded by the EEC Commission to the Water Research Center to study and report on the State of the Art of water purification in the nine EEC countries, including Belgium, Denmark, France, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, and Sweden. This text compares potable water treatment practice in the EEC countries, Sweden and the USA. Proposals are made for a Research and Development program appropriate to the Community for the middle and longer term needs. This book describes the processes employed in the water treatment reflects the emphasis placed on potable water treatment and on the use, particularly, of physic-chemical methods. It briefly deals with the water pollution control legislation and policies adopted in the countries studied. The information is obtained by surveying the literature and by visiting leading water treatment experts in the various countries. Water abstraction sources used in the countries featured in this book are tabulated overleaf in terms of present and predicted use for both groundwater and surface water. This book is of value to environmental scientists, engineers, and researchers.

This volume draws together diverse sources of information from the EIB’s own reports and bulletins, as well as reports of the Us Federal Reserve Board, the IMF and OECD, together with press and journal sources to examine the history, borrowing and lending operations from 1958-1980. It also discusses some of the environmental and social effects of its lending activities. Some consideration has also been given to the bank’s operations beyond EU boundaries. The book sheds light on an important EU institution which is crucial to EU member states’ infrastructure, industry and economy.

This book summarizes the advanced sustainable trends in removing toxic pollutants by environmental and biotechnological processes from both industrial wastewater and sewage wastewater. The book also provides an assessment of the potential application of several existing wastewater bioremediation techniques and introduces new cutting-edge technologies. Among other valuable information covered, here are the methods, procedures, materials (especially low-cost materials originating from industrial and agricultural waste), management of wastewater containing toxic pollutants, and valorization possibilities of waste resulting from the removal of toxic pollutants from wastewater. Tonnes of hazardous waste pollutants released by industries are a challenge worldwide. With the ever-growing population and shrinking landfill areas, managing the disposal of pollutants is a matter of severe concern. Industrial wastewater treatment, recycling, and reuse are serious issues in today’s context, not just to protect the environment from pollution, but also to conserve water resources so that water stress is reduced. This book is designed for engineers, scientists, and other professionals and serves as a good summary of the current state-of-the-art and innovative research challenges to control pollution for coming generations.

This Issue follows on from the review of waste incineration in Issue 2, providing a thorough and detailed review of other waste management options. Waste generation affects everyone, and its treatment and disposal are matters of increasing complexity and urgency. Waste Treatment and Disposal examines the environmental impact of sewage and industrial effluent treatment on inland and coastal waters, in the atmosphere and on land. It also looks into current practice in the design, engineering, operation and control of landfill sites, and the effect of changes in regulatory policy. A wide range of waste management practices result in atmospheric discharges and this book reviews the localized impacts and mitigation of the discharge and the regulatory framework within which waste management has to operate. Waste Treatment and Disposal also covers the general and technical issues facing the materials recycling industry; looks into the factors affecting deep underground storage of radioactive fuel waste produced by nuclear reactors; and provides data from a number of case studies in cost-benefit analysis, demonstrating the utility of a consistent economic theory of waste management.
