The War of 1812 was fought by eighteen states--the original thirteen states that formed the Union, as well as Vermont, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and Louisiana. In the preparation of this work, the compiler surveyed the records of the National Archives, as well as many of the libes and archives of the eighteen states in which fatalities were recorded. The end result is an authoritative list of some 3,500 known military dead of the War of 1812. The entries, which are alphabetically arranged, give the name of the deceased, his rank, the name of his company or branch of service, his date of death, and an indication as to whether the individual died in battle or as a prisoner of war.

"The grave markers of Wicomico County are more than genealogical records. They are records of custom, fashion, economic conditions, even the twang of Wicomico County speech. "Through them the settlement and movement of families can be traced. Epidemics that swept the area. The storms that blasted it. The wars that plagued it. Through our grave markers is revealed much of the history of two hundred years of Wicomico County living as well as dying." "The earliest death in the county marked by a still readable inscription dates from 1739..." Most entries are from the 1800s. A full name index adds to the value of this work.

Woodland Cemetery, the second-oldest cemetery in Cleveland, was named after a romantic description of an unseen Cleveland that was part of a popular 1803 pastoral poem, The Pleasures of Hope, by Scottish poet Thomas Campbell. Its 60 acres provide a primer on American cemetery design, from the "rural cemetery" intricacies of the 1850s to the more rambling style of the late 19th century to the rectangular 20th-century grid. Its mausoleums are designed in Classical, Victorian, Egyptian, and Richardson rustic styles. These varied structures--along with angels, obelisks, and military memorials--are symbolic of the residents resting within the gates.
