This is not a commentary, but a series of Bible studies employing the Inductive Study Approach in order to arrive at a knowledge of how the text should be personally applied to one's life. Formatted in a question and answer format, it facilitates the process of observation-what does the text say, interpretation-what does the text mean, and the ultimate goal of application-how should I personally apply the text to my life. Something the reader of Zechariah has to pay attention to is that which applies to the original historical situation of Zechariah's day, that which was foretold through Zechariah and fulfilled in the course of Christ's First Coming, and that which still has a future anticipated fulfillment in the Second Coming. The local historical conflicts involving Jerusalem and Judah have a much greater, ultimate realization in what is referred to over and over again in the text of Zechariah as "that day"-that is, what we know to be the closing stages of the 70th Week of Daniel as it culminates and then initiates the Millennial Reign of Christ. In the process of God's literal redemption of Jerusalem, the land and the people comes their spiritual redemption, so that ultimately as all these take their place in His Millennial Kingdom and everything meets God's standards of finally being "HOLY TO THE LORD." (Zech. 14:20) This is something which can be leveraged in our personal application of the Scriptures contained in Zechariah. We need to not only understand that God is in control and has a plan in spite of how current circumstances appear to us, and that He has a much greater purpose and plan which is future to our current work, but intrinsically building upon it. Faithfulness to His Word and ways in the present have are not only impactful on others-especially future generations, but on our own spiritual destiny as well. But our own agenda is to live so as to be biblically qualified as "holy to the Lord." Another is to note that as they are building the Temple of God-which in the New Testament economy is now the Body of Christ, there is not simply the requirement that we live in obedience to His Word and ways in order to properly serve and worship, but provide an example to those called from afar to also come and worship. The literal demands placed upon Israel as an example to the Gentiles is a basis for the self-examination of believers in their witness and role to the unsaved at present. This self-study guide offers a look at Israel after the Babylonian exile and the prophecies that were revealed during that time. Haggai made four appeals to the people, including a call to construct the Temple and to have confidence in the future. Zechariah continued to encourage the people to finish the Temple and relayed visions and other prophecies. And when the people became complacent, Malachi was God's instrument for rebuking them for their neglect of God and then teaching what true worship is. The books in the Jensen Bible Self-Study Guide series are designed to provide you with a broader understanding of God’s Word. Offering historical context and background, author information, charts, and other helps, these books will equip you with a comprehensive reference tool you’ll return to often. Each study includes an opportunity for analysis, response, and further study in a response-oriented format. The thirty-nine books in this series are suitable for both personal and group use.

The encouragement which Zechariah's prophecies brought to the Jews who returned from exile helped them rebuild both the Temple and their national identity. Yet Zechariah's message of hope pointed beyond the glory of the temple to one greater than the temple: the Anointed One (Messiah) who would become both priest and king forever over all nations

The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God's Word. These 12-week studies lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic components: (1) reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) "Gospel Glimpses" highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) "Whole-Bible Connections" show how any given passage connects to the Bible's overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) "Theological Soundings" identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God's grace on every page of the Bible. The books of Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi contain messages to God's people who, after experiencing deliverance from exile, still struggled with doubt, discouragement, and despair in the Promised Land. The prophets called them to faith as they awaited an even greater deliverance yet to come. Through this 12-week study, readers will see the faithfulness of God as he restores his presence among his people through the temple—a foretaste of the promised Messiah, who is the true temple and ultimate fulfillment of God's promises. Part of the Knowing the Bible series.
