This book fosters an awareness of multilingualism as lived or as subjectively experienced from the perspective of those involved in language education and teacher education. Responding to multilingual and visual turns, it widens the repertoire of methodologies dominating the field of language teacher education, from linguistic or verbal to visual. The chapters, written by practising language teachers and teacher educators, explore aspects of multilingualism accessed through visual means in a wide range of contexts. Using social justice as a transformative framework, they highlight the biases, inequalities and linguistic hierarchies within schools and teacher education, and promote respect for linguistic plurality and cultural diversity in these settings. They illustrate how visual methods can be used to reconstruct histories of individual multilingualism, identify present language ideologies and support teachers’ professional development by means of envisioning the future self in action. This book offers an international account of the use of linguistic landscapes to promote multilingual education, from primary school to the university, and in teacher education programs. It brings linguistic landscapes to the forefront of multilingual education in school settings and teacher education, expanding the disciplinary domains through which they have been studied. Drawing on multidisciplinarity and placing linguistic landscapes in the field of language (teacher) education, this book presents empirical studies developed in eleven countries: Australia, France, Germany, Israel, Japan, Mozambique, The Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Spain, and The United States. The chapters illustrate how multilingual pedagogies can be enhanced using linguistic landscapes in mainstream education and are written by partners of the Erasmus Plus project LoCALL “LOcal Linguistic Landscapes for global language education in the school context”.

The purpose of this book is to guide teachers to understand theory related to teaching multilingual students and put it into practice in their classrooms. Throughout each chapter, the authors uniquely bring together relevant theory regarding language (e.g. the multilingual turn, second language acquisition, translanguaging) literacy (e.g. reading comprehension, new literacy studies, multimodality), and culture (e.g. funds of knowledge, culturally sustaining pedagogies). The chapter authors (practicing ESL, bilingual, world language, language immersion, and mainstream teachers) share how they are innovatively teaching multilingual students by understanding theory and applying it to their instructional setting. The audience for this book is teachers of multilingual students who are in the dynamic process of language acquisition. This includes TESOL/ESL, bilingual, language immersion, and world language teachers, as well as mainstream teachers who teach bilingual students—essentially all educators in modern society. This collection examines a diverse range of approaches to multilingualism in teacher education programmes across Europe and North America. The authors investigate how pre-service teachers are being prepared to work in multilingual contexts and discuss the key features of current pre-service teacher education initiatives that address the increasing linguistic and cultural diversity evident in classrooms in their respective countries. The focus is not only on migrant-background learners but includes students from Indigenous, autochthonous and heritage language backgrounds, and speakers of minoritised regional varieties. The chapters contextualise, both historically and ideologically, the specific initiatives and measures taken in the participating countries. They also reveal the complexity of each educational context and the role that history, language policies and institutional and programmatic priorities play in the development and implementation of a multilingual focus in teacher education. This volume looks at the interactions of collaborating teachers in multilingual classrooms and how these impact on what counts as knowledge in the secondary school classroom. It also looks at how policy statements and ideologies around multilingualism position teachers and learners in particular ways. A linguistic ethnographic approach is taken in the study, which considers the discourses of whole class and small group teaching and learning. Chapters consider the relation between different languages, different pedagogues and different teacher identities in the secondary school classroom. The book documents how a policy of inclusion is played out in practice.
