A thin client is a Network Computer that runs Windows programs, providing the infrastructure that enables an Intranet to reach its full potential. The benefits of thin client computers are the comparatively low cost and the ability to manage these machines centrally, providing convenience and efficiency. Employees who need computers but don't use them intensively can use thin clients to access corporate databases and corporate publishing through a Web browser, for email, for word processing, and even for GroupWare. This is a straightforward book that will be useful to officers, executives, supervisors, and many others who wish to implement and use thin clients on an Intranet.

As ICT and data processing systems have become ever more extensive and ubiquitous there has been widespread adoption of a distributed Client / Server topology to meet business and personal computing needs. The standard connectivity for a typical workstation is built around a Personal Computer linked to a nominated group of local nodes and Servers (Local Area Network), and via an external connection to myriad Internet resources worldwide. This model provides the knowledge worker and private ICT systems user with access to a comprehensive range of ICT services readily and efficiently, creating a global nexus of online computer users and their chosen ICT solutions and services. However, certain components of the ICT solution (including critical data and processing power) are exposed to fortuitous contact and risk of interference, misuse and theft due to poor security standards. In addition, the Client/Server units consume excessive energy, leading to poor ecological performance of up to one billion workstations worldwide.A trusted synergy of newly available technologies - Virtualisation, Thin Client and an enhanced Remote (RCP) interconnect - can now significantly enhance this model.

ABSTRACT: Thin client technology is widely available for many platforms as an alternative configuration to traditional network architectures. This research closely examines the design of thin client technology and how it could be used in a mobile computing environment. This examination is placed in the context of rapidly evolving technologies such as Sun Microsystem's Kilobyte Virtual Machine implementation for mobile devices. A survey of differing classes of mobile devices shows the potential for expanding these devices' capability beyond locally installed programs. Wireless connectivity is allowing developers to plan on high-bandwidth connectivity for networked applications though this is still in its infancy. A combination of these synergistic technologies could potentially create a new type of computing environment. This new environment is consistent with the pervasive computing paradigm created in the early 1990s. This research project outlines the capabilities that this type of environment could create and implements a subset of this vision using thin client technology in combination with a Java 2 Micro Edition enabled, mobile device. The goal is to fully understand the capabilities and limitations of such a device within the design and testing environment created.
