"A scholarly work but as readable as a novel, this is the first history of plantation life as experienced by the laborers themselves. The oppressive round-the-clock conditions under which they worked will make you glad they fought back in one huge strike; Takaki charts this conflict well." --San Francisco Chronicle

As he moved towards me, my heart raced with every step he took. His hand gently stroked the side of my face, sending a tingle through my body. I shivered at his touch, just as I had before. He leaned in, his hot breath fanning over my face, leaving me feeling weak and mind-numbed. "You should run, Zera," he said in a raw voice that made me shudder against him. "It's the sensible thing to do when dealing with someone like me." "I don't want to run," I stubbornly replied, tired of his games. It wasn't helping anyone. I could see that he wanted me, and I wanted him too. His nose rubbed against mine, and he pressed his forehead to mine. "Oh, darling, but you should," he whispered. "I won't be like those little boys you've been with. I won't stop when you want me to. I won't stop until I'm completely buried in your mind and soul. You will belong to me." Six years ago, she was framed by her wicked sister and was abandoned by her then husband while she was pregnant. Six years later, she started anew with a different identity. Oddly, the same man who abandoned her in the past had not stopped pestering her at her front door. “Miss Gibson, what’s your relationship with Mister Lynch?” She smiled and answered nonchalantly, “I don’t know him.” “But sources say that you were once married.” She answered as she tucked her hair, “Those are rumors. I’m not blind, you see.” That day, she was pinned on the wall the moment she stepped in her door. Her three babies cheered, “Daddy said mommy’s eyes are bad! Daddy says he’ll fix it for mommy!” She wailed, “Please let me go, darling!”

This short novel is dedicated to my wonderful family: my children, Cathy, Fernando, Phillip; my grandchildren Jozette, Alaena, Phoenix; and my husband, Max. The novel is especially written for an audience of young readers or adults who choose to have a childs imagination. It was such fun for me to develop the characters and scenes of this mystery. It all starts with a womans silhouette that appears on the third-floor window of this old Victorian mansion. No one in the town of Sneila has ever seen her except when she stands behind the sheer curtain. The children of the town look forward to Halloween every year. The children together walk down the dirt road to the mansion that sits at the edge of town behind enormously tall trees and a black iron fence. Every Halloween, the children know that, in front of the mansion outside the gate, there will be a mysterious white cauldron filled with magic candies for each child. The candies are in baggies with each childs name written on the front of the baggie. How does she know every childs name? Where does this candy come from? The children agree that the candy is very different, like its out of this world. These are only two of the mysteries that exist in the town of Sneila. Much mystery lives in the town of Sneila. The number of people in this town never changes. When one person dies, another is born. People who die are not buried. The number 8 appears throughout the town. Sometimes you have to add two digits to find the 8. The infinity symbol appears throughout the novel. Magic turtles surface and communicate with the two main characters, Samantha and Victoria. Flickering lights, hidden doors, basement, baskets, spaceships, magic turtles, mysterious bubbles, candles, and fairies create a magical kingdom. Wrinkles and gray hair are witnesses to times past. The surprise ending is sure to give you goose bumps! For the Wild explores the ways in which the commitments of radical environmental and animal-rights activists develop through powerful experiences with the more-than-human world during childhood and young adulthood. The book addresses the question of how and why activists come to value nonhuman animals and the natural world as worthy of protection. Emotions and memories of wonder, love, compassion, anger, and grief shape activists’ protest practices and help us understand their deep-rooted dedicaztion to the planet and its creatures. Drawing on analyses of activist art, music, and writings, as well as interviews and participant-observation in activist communities, Sarah M. Pike delves into the sacred duties of these often misunderstood and marginalized groups with openness and sensitivity.
