Excerpt from Vera Spaientia: Or True Wisdom The works of Thomas a Kempis need no praise, for they have stood the test of time, which com mits to oblivion many works that had been once praised and widely read. I have never seen an English translation of the work of Thomas a Kempis entitled Vera Sapientia (true Wisdom). A Latin copy of this work, published in Paris in 1804, came into my hands. Having read it with pleasure and profit, I did it into English. Friends to whom I showed it advised me to have it published, in the belief and h0pe that it would do good. It was, moreover, suggested to have it published in London, from which it would have a larger circulation. It is well known that the language into which a work is faithfully translated suffers in purity and idiom. May I ask the reader to bear in mind this fact, and to excuse any defects which may be noticeable in this translation.
