A inserção da Educação Ambiental nas escolas de educação básica é o aspecto central desta obra. Essa modalidade está presente na escola desde sua origem, inclusive em termos de públicas. No entanto, como outros avanços e conquistas na educação (algumas vezes expressos na legislação e nas públicas anunciadas pelos diferentes governos, níveis e períodos), a garantia que traz a Lei n° 9.795/99, que instituiu a Política Nacional de Educação Ambiental, não logrou inserir nas escolas de educação básica ações concretas de Educação Ambiental como esperávamos, gostaríamos e continuamos lutando. O estudo empreendido pela autora deste livro trata desse relevante tema e traz a relação entre a escola e a Educação Ambiental, especialmente como ela é tratada, com destaque para o desvelamento de como tem sido a implantação dos programas propostos pelas diferentes esferas de governo. A autora precisou delimitar um campo de estudo, tanto no que diz respeito aos espaços educativos a serem estudados (quais escolas?) quanto no que diz respeito aos programas em vigência. Assim, delimitou como universo de pesquisa as escolas públicas estaduais de um município do interior do Estado de São Paulo (SP) e a Agenda 21 Escolar. Trabalhou, portanto, com o objetivo de identificar escolas em que a proposta dessa Agenda está presente, observando a forma como está vigente e quais são as dificuldades e as facilidades encontradas por todos os que estão com ela envolvidos.
