With considerable economic growth and technology development, China is rapidly experiencing motorization and a dramatic expansion of the transportation system. This dissertation centers on exploring vehicle ownership in China with new transportation technology influencing, and addresses the sustainability implications. First, it examines household vehicle purchase decisions across 59 cities in China with broad geographic, environmental, and socio-economic characteristics, focusing on a subset of households who own e-bikes and relying on a telephone survey from an industry customer database. Second, this dissertation presents a study on public perceptions and purchase intention towards new energy vehicles (battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle), and discusses factors influencing new energy vehicle purchase and illustrates policy implications, using an intercept survey in Beijing. Third, this dissertation reveals daily use patterns and users' experience of an emerging transportation mode (micro electric vehicle) in China using a semi-structure interview. Users' purchase decision, mode choice, safety perception, vehicle status, and future usage are discussed. Lastly, a behavioral life cycle assessment (LCA) model that includes explicit, probability-based behavioral inputs that influence choices in the LCA process is built. Furthermore, an LCA model for transportation system for China is developed using China's manufacture inventory data.

This book discusses various transport sustainability issues from the perspective of developing countries, exploring key issues, problems and potential solutions for improving transport sustainability in China. It first reviews the current transport sustainability baselines in the three key dimensions of environmental, economic and social sustainability, via an international comparison encompassing both developed and developing countries in different world regions. Then, with a time frame up to 2030, the study groups 100 major Chinese cities according to their baseline conditions, projected population and economic growth, and common sustainability challenges in passenger transport. A systematic attempt is made to discuss the characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of various emerging sustainable transport strategies, including the metro systems, bus rapid transit, light rail, bicycles (and e-bicycles), electric vehicles and walking. Based on the different city clusters identified, the study then explores the opportunities and constraints of introducing a range of emerging sustainable transport strategies through both statistical analysis and detailed fieldwork. Future directions and challenges are identified based on official documents, onsite observations and interviews with local people. The study concludes with thoughts on sustainable transport in smart cities, the importance of governance, local participation, internal and external city movements, and towards a holistic sustainable transport plan. This article explores how the institutional context, including central and local governments, has co-evolved with business in relation to small cars and sustainability. This is a very relevant issue for business and society in view of the environmental implications of the rapidly growing vehicle fleet in China, the economic importance attached to this pillar industry by the government, and citizen interest in owning and driving increasingly larger cars. The interactions between different levels of government, and with business (both domestic and foreign-invested) in countries with a large role for the state is a novel area of study in the business-society area and a complex one given the multitude of objectives and interests involved in industry competitiveness, economic development, energy security and sustainability. The article shows that the central government has adopted policies to further the production and use of small cars, which it perceives as serving environmental, economic and social goals. Concurrently, however, many local governments imposed restrictions on small cars and have, implicitly or explicitly, favored larger cars. There seems to be a clear linkage to municipal ownership of those domestic automobile companies which, via joint ventures with foreign firms, focused more on larger cars. By adopting a co-evolutionary approach focused on macro-level interactions, the case helps to shed some more light on concrete sustainability challenges, and broader on government-business interactions in a highly institutionalized setting, contributing insights on issues that have remained underexposed in business and society research.

The autonomous vehicle is predicted to change the paradigm of passenger mobility and dreamful visions have been very present in the media. Promoted by companies and governments, the new technology is said to make mobility safer and more environmentally friendly. But the reports are onesided. There is a limited amount of research on the potential downsides of the autonomous vehicle, particularly at the system level. Also, existing research mostly uses data and examples from the Western world. This qualitative study questions if the autonomous vehicle is truly sustainable. It identifies sustainability risks and opportunities for urban mobility systems in China which result from the implementation of autonomous vehicles. Factors with influence on the future mobility system are identified, analyzed and combined to four distinct emerging mobility systems: Radical ownership-based system, evolutionary ownership-based system, shared mobility system and public transportation system. Through expert interviews, the emerging mobility systems are assessed along twelve sustainability indicators. The results reveal that (1) when it comes to sustainability the future of the autonomous vehicle does not look as bright as the ubiquitous dream promises, (2) the radical ownership-based system, with a high level of autonomy and vehicle ownership rate, produces the biggest sustainability risks while the shared mobility system produces the biggest sustainability opportunities, and (3) both the direction and the magnitude of the sustainability impact strongly depends on the rebound effect which is not yet understood well-enough to design rebound-proof strategies for the future.
