Martin and Osa Johnson thrilled American audiences of the 1920s and 30s with their remarkable movies of far-away places, exotic peoples, and the dramatic spectacle of African wildlife. Their own lives were as exciting as the movies they made--sailing through the South Sea Islands, dodging big game at African waterholes, flying small planes over the veldt, taking millionaires on safari. Osa Johnson's ghostwritten autobiography, I Married Adventure, became a national bestseller. The 1939 film version was billed as "the story of World Exploration's First Lady, whose indomitable daring would be stayed by neither snarling lion nor crouching leopard, tropic tempest nor savage tribesman " Heroes to millions, Osa and Martin seemed to embody glamor, daring, and the all-American ideal of self-reliance. Probing beneath the glamor of the Johnsons' public image, Pascal and Eleanor Imperato explore the more human side of the couple's lives--and ways the Johnsons shaped, for better and for worse, America's vision of Africa. Drawing on many years of research, access to a wealth of letters and archives, interviews with many who worked closely with the Johnsons, and their own deep knowledge of Africa, the authors present a fascinating and intimate portrait of this intrepid couple.

How far would you go to experience an exceptional spiritual life? Big Words are God’s voice, rooted in an intimate relationship with him—the Spirit of Christ speaking to you, guiding and shaping your life. They usually come at life’s crossroads, those moments that define your future. These words are the roadmap to an adventure that matters for eternity. Kevin Springer was only 18 years old, reeling from disappointment and humiliation, when he discovered God was a dream wrecker. At age 15 he believed in God and thought he was his friend, but now God was silent when Kevin needed him most. Kevin carefully planned and worked hard for his future—his college choice, his career, even where he’d live. He did everything required for success. That’s when God monkey-wrenched his life. His plans evaporated, leaving him in a vacuum of despair, isolation, and self-pity. Kevin decided to run. He packed his car and headed as far away from God as he could. Then, when things couldn’t get any worse, God spoke; softly, deeply, gently. “If you enter the freeway, your life will never be the same. You will change the direction of your life, and it will not be for the better.” Kevin listened to the Big Word and discovered God’s plans were far better than anything he could ever imagine. Kevin took a U-turn back into God’s will and onto A Road of Unimagined Adventure. This is his story.

When starting a family history project, where do you begin? For me, the answer is simple: Genesis. Being a man, a man of science, I find that as I get older, science has proven more and more that the truth is very simple. In the opening statements of Genesis, God created the universe as we know it and also created the stars. How is such a thing possible? We are children of God. You know, children are like their creator, full of wonder. Wonder, why? Genesis states, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void and darkness was over the face of the deep. As we learn more on just how we got here, along comes a brilliant young scientist named Stephen Hawking. He explains in mathematical ways how the universe started with a big bang, started from nothing, and burst forth faster than the speed of light. Stars formed and gathered together to form galaxies then matter collected to form planets to circle around the stars. There was eternal darkness, and then there were the stars and light. As time passed, God planted the seeds of life. What is time? As we read the Bible, we were always in conflict with time. How do we feel comfortable with the evolution of life and the time frame of the Bible? Here, again, I find the answer is simple. Time, to us, is something we made up to understand what goes on around us; God is on his own time. I like to use baking an apple pie as my example of time and what it takes. Heres the question I ask, how long does it take to bake an apple pie? The answer I get is about an hour. I reply with Oh, you can? So here is my response to the one-hour apple pie: Where did the apple come from? How long did the apples take to grow? Where did that variety of apple come from? How long did it take for the seed to grow into a tree? How did you get the apple? At a store? How did the store get there? How did the refrigeration and transportation come to be? What about the cinnamon and sugar you used, where did it come from? (Cinnamon comes from Indiadried tree bark.) What about the tin used to make the pan used to bake the pie? When was electricity harnessed to be used by man, the modern stove?
