"Manual muscle testing and goniometry are common assessments used in the practice of occupational therapy. Face-to-face learning often does not provide adequate opportunity for students to comprehend and subsequently demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of manual muscle testing and goniometry. The evidence-based project explored the use of supplemental learning videos, in addition to traditional face-to-face instruction, to determine if the demonstrations in the videos improved occupational therapy assistant students' self-confidence in performing manual muscle testing and goniometry assessments. Additionally, the project will determine if occupational therapy assistant students who receive supplemental learning videos will report high levels of satisfaction with the videos themselves. A convenience sample of occupational therapy assistant students (n=19) from a small community college were recruited for the project. The project consisted of a pre-survey at the start of the first class, four weeks of in class learning, independent learning through videos out of class, and a post survey given the last week of class. The results from the evidence-based project strongly support the effectiveness of supplemental videos to increase students' confidence, knowledge, and performance. In addition, students were overall satisfied with the videos as they were able to practice at a time and place that was convenient to their learning. Videos should also be used as a supplement to reinforce learning and not to supplant face-to-face instruction. Future direction will be to educate faculty who teach performance skills that could be replicated in order to promote best practice in occupational therapy education. Keywords: goniometry, kinesiology, manual muscle testing, supplemental videos." -- Abstract.

Perspectives on Occupational Therapy Education: Past, Present, and Future outlines a path forward for occupational therapy educators, incorporating the impact of historical context, contemporary issues and trends, and international viewpoints on the development of the profession. With this mission in mind, Drs. Steven D. Taff, Lenin C. Grajo, and Barbara R. Hooper offer helpful tips, practical tools, and fresh insights to support current and future educators in developing their teaching philosophies and pedagogies. The book is divided into three main sections—past, present, and future—and examines: • The history of occupational therapy education, including the influence of critical philosophies, their relationship to higher education and healthcare, and the growth of accreditation standards and professional degree programs. • Current trends and challenges in healthcare and higher education, including bridging the gap between education and practice, the use of competency exams, expanding educational research, and promoting diversity and inclusion among faculty and students. • International perspectives on the development and future of occupational therapy education from leading scholars in Africa, Australia, Europe, North America, South America, and Southeast Asia, including trends in educational technologies, fieldwork education and requirements, and inter-professional education. An indispensable resource for educators, Perspectives on Occupational Therapy Education: Past, Present, and Future concludes with an imagining of the occupational therapy education landscape in the year 2050: a future in which occupational therapy educators are continuously responding to ongoing changes in health care policies, adapting to a more diverse and globally connected student population, and articulating the distinct value of occupational therapy in new and emerging areas of practice. Included with the text are online supplemental materials for faculty use in the classroom.

"There are many textbooks on the market dedicated either wholly or in part to the topics of goniometry and manual muscle testing; however, there are few books available that serve as a standalone quick reference for the clinician or student. The idea behind this manual was born from the need for a reference that would supply the clinician or student with a snapshot view of the basics of goniometry and manual muscle testing. This manual was not designed or intended as a teaching tool or as an introductory text on the subjects of goniometry or manual muscle testing. It does not contain information on the theories, validity, or reliability of goniometry or manual muscle testing; other textbooks cover those areas sufficiently. This book is intended to be a simple, user-friendly reference for the experienced clinician or student"--

Clear, illustrated instructions provide a guide to patient positioning, direction of motion, and direction of resistance. In addition to muscle testing of normal individuals and others with weakness or paralysis, this edition includes new coverage of alternative strength tests and performance tests for older adults and others with functional decline (such as the inactive and obese). Written by educators Helen J. Hislop, Dale Avers, and Marybeth Brown, this classic physical therapy reference now features an Evolve companion website with video clips demonstrating key muscle testing techniques. Drawings and arrows along with clear written directions make it easy to understand and perform muscle testing procedures, allowing you to assess deficits in strength, balance, and range of motion.
