The University of Massachusetts Amherst boasts over a century of both intercollegiate and intramural athletics. The story begins with the early recreational activities of a New England agricultural college and ends with a highly competitive Division I athletic schedule. From playing ice hockey on the campus pond in 1908 or dribbling basketballs in the Curry Hicks cage in 1931 to the construction of the state-of-the-art Mullins Center in 1993, the University of Massachusetts Amherst has produced some of the best athletes in American sports history. These stars include hockey great Jerry McCarthy, a 1924 Olympic silver medalist; softball pitcher Danielle Henderson, a 2000 Olympic gold medalist; and Julius Erving, legendary NBA star.

The University of Massachusetts Lowell owes its origins to two institutions founded in the 1890s. In 1894, the state authorized the founding of the Lowell Normal School, an institution that trained teachers for the state's public school system. In 1895, the state also authorized the founding of Lowell Textile School to encourage research in new technologies related to textile manufacture. Over the decades, the two schools on opposite sides of the Merrimack River grew. Lowell Normal became Lowell Teacher's College in 1932 and then Lowell State College in 1960, and Lowell Textile became Lowell Technological Institute in 1953. In 1975, the state merged the two institutions to form the University of Lowell, which, in 1991, became part of the UMass system. University of Massachusetts Lowell: 125 Years draws from a rich array of historical images to honor the school's past and present and preserve the memory of students, faculty, staff, buildings, and events.

Emerging from a matrix of Old Left, black nationalist, and bohemian ideologies and institutions, African American artists and intellectuals in the 1960s coalesced to form the Black Arts Movement, the cultural wing of the Black Power Movement. In this comprehensive analysis, James Smethurst examines the formation of the Black Arts Movement and demonstrates how it deeply influenced the production and reception of literature and art in the United States through its negotiations of the ideological climate of the Cold War, decolonization, and the civil rights movement. Taking a regional approach, Smethurst examines local expressions of the nascent Black Arts Movement, a movement distinctive in its geographical reach and diversity, while always keeping the frame of the larger movement in view. The Black Arts Movement, he argues, fundamentally changed American attitudes about the relationship between popular culture and "high" art and dramatically transformed the landscape of public funding for the arts.
