Excerpt from University of Iowa Studies, Vol. 2: Studies in Education In attempting to solve some of these problems one is con fronted with the desirability of some tests or scales with which to measure ability or achievement. With suitable means of measuring ability one can determine the amount of improvement in the given ability due to any given method used. Evidently a suitable means of measuring must be Objective. The personal, or subjective, element must be eliminated, in order to arrive at accuracy similar to that obtainable with the meter-stick or the foot-rule (9, The purpose of this study is to derive scales for measuring the results of physics teaching and to show some of their uses and applications as means of objective measurement. It is hoped that the results of this investigation may prove to be of some value in solving some of the many problems confronting physics instructors and supervisors. Excerpt from The University of Iowa Studies in Psychology, Vol. 2 These statistics that have been Obtained in the laboratory have been supplemented by some tests made upon school children. As the account Of the latter occurs in fragments under the appropriate topics, it is necessary to state, in this introduction, how the data were Obtained. Six students in a university course in genetic psychology, under the direction Of the writer, made these tests upon chil dren in the public schools Of Iowa City during the spring term Of 1898. These students had previously pursued courses in psychology and pedagogy and undertook the investigation mainly for the sake Of the training. Ten boys and ten girls Of each age from six to fifteen, inclusive, were selected from a grammar school and a primary school. Mr. G. C. Pracker, the principal Of the grammar school, selected and graded the children. A fair distribution Of the Children was Obtained by selecting, from the registers, those whose birthdays fell nearest the day Of the appointment. The respective teachers invited them to come to the school rooms at different periods on Saturday mornings. They were received by a teacher who registered and guided them. Excerpt from University of Iowa Studies, Vol. 2: Studies in Education Every person who is familiar with the present situation in the teaching of high school physics feels the need of scientific investigation to aid in solving a number of vital questions. Some of the more significant of these are the following. To get the results sought, how much time should be spent in performing experiments in the laboratory? Do the results of laboratory work justify the expense involved in furnishing several sets of equipment? How should the time for the study of high school physics be distributed between work in the laboratory, learning the fundamental principles, solving problems, actual time in recitations, and observing classroom demonstrations? How should the pupil's total grade be determined? How may the course of study be revised to meet the needs of the majority more satisfactorily? In attempting to solve some of these problems one is confronted with the desirability of some tests or scales with which to measure ability or achievement. With suitable means of measuring ability one can determine the amount of improvement in the given ability due to any given method used. Evidently a suitable means of measuring must be objective. The personal, or subjective, element must be eliminated, in order to arrive at accuracy similar to that obtainable with the meter-stick or the foot-rule (9, 12). The purpose of this study is to derive scales for measuring the results of physics teaching and to show some of their uses and applications as means of objective measurement. It is hoped that the results of this investigation may prove to be of some value in solving some of the many problems confronting physics instructors and supervisors.
