In this dictionary of the Nez Perce language, linguist Haruo Aoki illustrates how each word is used by citing examples from published Nez Perce oral literature. In addition, Aoki retranscribes and incorporates words from earlier publications that are recognized by today's Nez Perce speakers. The dictionary includes an English-Nez Perce index, appendixes listing phonosymbolic words and Nez Perce animal and plant names, and illustrations from Nez Perce life. Originally published in 1994, the Nez Perce Dictionary continues to be a reference and resource for new generations of speakers and scholars.

"Aspect is widely present in most Quechuan languages, but it has been summarily treated or even overlooked in most of the existing descriptive grammars. This book changes that situation completely. It contains detailed discussions of the semantics and the use of aspect in its relation to tense, modality, evidentiality, etc., and opens up a wealth of unexpected data. ...The historical chapters are a most welcome addition to the grammatical analysis because they are highly relevant for our understanding of the development of aspect in other Quechuan languages and in the Quechuan family as a whole." - Willem Adelaar, Leiden University "This book addresses what is perhaps the most challenging area in the study of Quechuan languages: the scores of suffixes that occur between the verb root and person-marking inflection. It not only sheds light on one of these languages, South Conchucos Quechua, but it shows us new ways to investigate such complexities. This book will stand as a landmark in the study of Quechua." - David Weber, SIL International

The Yuki language, including Huchnom and Coast Yuki, was spoken in Mendocino County until relatively recently (the last speaker died in 1983). This grammar is based primarily on spoken narratives recorded by Alfred Kroeber between 1901-1911. While Yuki was extensively documented over the course of the twentieth century, there is relatively little in the way of actual published works on the language. Balodis discusses the language within the historical and cultural context of the people who spoke it.

It includes a grammatical sketch of Proto-Wintun, cognate sets with reconstructions and an index to the reconstructions. The book fulfills a need for in-depth reconstructions of proto-languages for California Indian language families, both for theoretical purposes and deeper comparison with other proto- or pre-languages.
