Un tal Alfonso, es una semiautobiografía de pocas páginas donde el autor pretende encajonar el tiempo ido y el tiempo presente, manejando las ideas sin dramatismo. Las anécdotas apocalíptica de la consumación de los siglos, que desentona la razón. Un buen lector, puede digerir el sensacionalismo de una información; pero hay otro público que le es difícil entender lo que puede, o no puede suceder. Es de nobleza que haya alguien que le baje la "nota" a la sintonía apocalíptica; para seguir viviendo en fe. Ciertamente, hay un nuevo amanecer.

In the "Cantigas de Santa Maria," a collection of about four hundred poems written in Galician, Alfonso X, el Sabio, king of Castile-Leon, has left us a kind of poetic biography. This volume explicates the historical circumstances surrounding the stories that the king tells about himself and his kingdom. As Mary's troubadour, he appeals to her as his advocate and consoler.

When a frustrated creole painter and a hard-working woman of indigenous descent bump into each other, their encounter undravels a relationship which spans more than fifty years of history. Against a background of unstable politics, indigenous mythology and contemporary religion, the protagonists have to decide whether to give up or to forge their own destinies.

Keith Whinnom, Professor of Spanish and Deputy Vice-Chancellor in the University of Exeter, died on March 6, 1986. He was one of the leading hispanists of his generation, and a world authority on the literature of the reign of the Catholic Monarchs (and, in a quite different area, on pidgin and creole languages). The contributors to this memorial volume are all specialists in the literature of Keith Whinnom’s chosen period, and all had close links with him, through personal friendship, research collaboration, and correspondence. They include his most admired teacher, two young scholars whom he helped at the outset of their careers, and representatives of the academic generations in between; they come from Britain, Spain, the United States, Argentina and France. Most of the articles deal with the favorite Whinnom subjects of cancionero poetry, sentimental romance, and Celestina, and there are others on historiography, humanistic prose, chivalric romance, sermons, drama, and the interaction of history and literature. A bibliography of Keith Whinnom’s scholarly writings is included.
