A Seventeen Best Book of the Year A New York Public Library Top Ten Best Book of the Year A Kirkus Best Book of the Year For fans of All the Bright Places and Looking for Alaska comes "a daring, inventive story about love and loss and longing, reminding us that every choice can be a new chance. A dazzling, not-to-be-missed debut." --Kathleen Glasgow, author of Girl in Pieces In one impulsive moment the summer before they leave for college, Scarlett and David plunge into a brief and irresistible swirl of romance, particle physics, and questionable decisions. Scarlett and David have known each other all their lives in small-town Graceville, Colorado, where David is just another mountain in the background, until, one day, he is suddenly so much more than part of the scenery. Magnetic, spontaneous, David is a gravitational force. And Scarlett, pragmatic, wry, eye on the future, welcomes the pull he has on her even as she resists it. Moving between the present and the past, this is the story of a seemingly grounded girl who's pulled into a lightning-strike romance with an electric-charged boy, and the enormity of the aftermath. Smart, bold, and emotionally deep, Shana Youngdahl's debut explores grief, guilt, and reconciling who you think you need to be with the person you've been all along. It's an aching, transporting reminder that between the past that shapes us and the unknowable future, we have only the present to forgive ourselves and forge ahead. "A story you won't forget." --Huntley Fitzpatrick, author of My Life Next Door "Mystery...Heartbreak...Hope...Readers will not be able to put this one down."--SLJ "Vivid" --Seventeen.com "You'll speed read through [it]" --PopSugar "John Green-like, intelligent and peppered with witty repartee" --Booklist "Heartbreaking, exquisitely crafted" --Estelle Laure, author of This Raging Light "Deeply authentic...Marvelously complex...Readers shouldn't miss [it]" --Kirkus, starred review "A complex, compassionately written love story" --PW "A definite purchase and must read."--VOYA "Perfect." --Book Page

After publication of the first volume of the Tropical Rain Forest, the International Journal of Mycology and Lichenology commented ``This is a welcome addition to the literature on the ecology of tropical rain forests. The book provides a wealth of data and stimulating discussions and is of great interest to ecologists interested in tropical areas.'' Whereas the first volume dealt with system-ecological aspects such as community organization and processes, the present volume concentrates on biogeographical aspects such as species composition, diversity, and geographical variation.Recent ecological research in the tropical rain forest has greatly extended our understanding of biogeographical patterns of variation in the various groups of organisms, and has revealed many of the ecological and evolutionary forces that led to the present patterns of variation. Many important systems of co-evolution between the tropical rain forest ecosystems have also come to light, and the loss of species and related damage is better understood in quantitative terms. This volume presents a comprehensive review of these and other features of the rain forest ecosystem structure, and the ecological processes operating that system. General chapters on abiotic and biotic factors are followed by specific chapters on all major groups of organisms. Prospects for the future are discussed and research needs clearly stated. Also the human exploitation of the system, its effects and its limits are discussed. The book is extensively illustrated by photographs, graphs, and tables, and comprehensive bibliographies follow each chapter. Author, systematic and subject indices complete the book.It is a must for all ecologists, agriculturists, foresters, agronomists, hydrologists, soil scientists, entomologists, human ecologists, nature conservationists, and planners dealing with tropical areas. Biologists and environmentalists will also find the volume of great interest.

This book provides a much needed and thorough treatment of the heat transfer in agitated disperse systems. It gives predictive equations for the heat transfer in moving beds, bubbling and circulating fluidized beds, pneumatic transport in vertical tubes and particulate fluidized beds. Owing to the many different modes of activation of heat transfer, the basic approach of the book is to provide experimental evidence of the relevance of particle motion to the proximity of solid surfaces for the heat transfer observed. This has been achieved by the evaluation of experiments obtained with a newly developed pulsed light method using luminous particles. Heat Transfer in Fluidized Beds will be of great use to students and researchers involved in heat transfer and thermodynamics.
