Excerpt from Umar Khayyam and His Age The writer is indebted to many books for his facts and the conclusions he has based on the facts. All of them cannot be mentioned here. But he must mention with particular gratitude - ih addi tion to Professor Browne's standard work on Persian literature - the Recherches sur les Rubai yat written by A. Christensen and published in 1905 Ignacz Goldziher's excellent study of The Influence of Parsiism on Islam published in English in 1912; Sir Edward Denison Ross's introduction to the edition of 1900; and Von Kramer's fine history of the Islamic spirit. Excerpt from Beneath the Bough: Omar Khayyam WE fly, 0 we fly, The swallows and I, For winter is past once more We are speeding to bring The soft message of spring, To a far-away northern shore. We fly, love, we fly, The swallows and I, By orchard and fragrant lea Over valley and rill, Over ocean and hill, To the country we love, to thee! We fly, love, we fly, The swallows and I, They dream Of their last year's nest, And I of true eyes Like our northern skies, And a heart on which mine may rest! Excerpt from The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Jr. Since the publication of Edward FitzGerald's classic translation of the Rubaiyat in 1851 - or rather since its general popularity several years later - poets minor and major have been rendering the sincerest form of flattery to the genius of the Irishman who brought Persia into the best regulated families. Unfortunately there was only one Omar, and there were scores of imitators who, in order to make the Astronomer go round, were obliged to draw him out to the thinness of Balzac's Magic Skin. While all this was going on, the present editor was forced to conclude that the burning literary need was not for more translators, but for more Omars to translate; and what was his surprise to note that the work of a later and superior Omar Khayyam was lying undiscovered in the wilds of Borneo! Excerpt from Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, the Astronomer Poet of Persia: Translated Into English Verse It is written in the chronicles of the ancients that this King of the Wise, Omar Khayyam, died at Naishapur in the year of the Hegira, 517 (a.d. In science he was unrivalled, -the very paragon of his age. Khwajah Nizami of Samarcand, who was one of his pupils, relates the follow ing story: I often used to hold conversations with my teacher, Omar Khayyam, in a garden; and one day he said to me, my tomb shall be in a spot, where the north wind may scatter roses over it.' I wondered at the words he spake, but I knew that his were no idle words. Years after, when I chanced to revisit N aishapur, I went to his final resting place, and 10! It was just outsides garden, and trees laden with fruit stretched their boughs over the garden wall, and dropped their flowers upon his tomb, so as the stone was hidden under them.' Thus far - without fear of Trespass - from the Calcutta Review. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
