This book describes the different elastomers utilized in tyre retreading. Among others, it discusses reinforcing fillers in terms of their efficacy, the use of bonding agents, and their relevance to the tyre retreading process. The authors give specific guidelines for the practical compounding of different rubber compounds to make retread. A practical approach is also taken to describing the manufacturing technology used in tyre retreading.

Much has happened recently in the field of waste management and this has had a strong impact on the handling of used tyres. This report provides up-to-date data and comment about the progress in the UK, Europe and North America in the handling of the problem of used tyres once removed from vehicles. Legislation in Europe is concentrating the minds of authorities and operators alike, to provide sustainable solutions to the recovery and recycling of these tyres and to maximise the benefit from such activity.

Substantial quantities of used tyres are being discarded annually throughout the world and this is likely to increase in line with the growth in road traffic. Given the environmental economic implications of this waste, the many regulating bodies world-wide are actively promoting policies aimed at recycling and reuse of the material for recovery as a valuable resource.
