Dentofacial orthopaedics is a term describing the treatment of malocclusion, or misalignment of the jaws. Such misalignment can cause difficulty with speech, chewing and sometimes breathing, as well as leading to an undesirable facial profile. Dentofacial orthopaedics is distinct from orthodontics, which is concerned with correcting the relative positions of the teeth themselves rather than the jaws.

The initial eight chapters provide a synthesis of the wide variety of treatments currently available for malocclusions in the sagittal, transverse, and vertical dimensions.
