While I was in Arran, said Mr. Spurgeon, I heard of a minister who preached in a certain church, and at the close of the service was strongly urged to promise for a future supply, the collection after his sermon having been un usually large. 'dear me, ' said the minis ter, with becoming pride, 'what might your ordinary collections amount to 2' 'last Sunday it was two-pence half-penny.' 'what is it to-da, then?' asked the minis ter, expecting to hear a large sum. 'eight pence half penny, ' was the reply. 'woe is me, groaned the minister, 'for I gave the Sixpence myself.' equal To the occasion. - He had never seen a telephone, and his friend was show ing him how it worked. He called up his house, and his wife came to the telephone. My dear, Mr. Jones is here, and I have asked him to come up to dinner. Then he turned to Mr. Jones and said - Put your ear to that and you will hear the answer. He did, and this was his answer - Now, John, I told you I would never have that disagreeable wretch in my house again. What was that? Spoke out Mr. Jones. Women are quick. She took in the situa tion in a second when she heard the strange voice, and quick as a flash came back the sweetest kind of a voice - Why, Mr. Jones, how do you do?
