This book summarises work done and experience gained over the past three decades in the area of tribology in electrical environments. It takes a close look at behaviour and response characteristics of rolling-element, and hydrodynamic journal & thrust bearings working under the influence of electrical current. Detailed analysis plugs the existing knowledge gaps in the area of tribology in electrical environments. This is because the genesis of intermolecular forces during tribological interaction involves electrostatic attraction or repulsion that creates electro-dynamic, magnetic and exchange forces between atoms. Therefore all tribological phenomena occurring in any interacting system is electrical in nature. - Keep your collection up-to date with the latest volume from Elsevier's Tribology and Interface Engineering Book Series - Includes 'real life' case studies

The temperature rise at the interface of two sliding bodies has significant bearing on the friction and wear characteristics of the bodies. The friction heat generated at the interface can be viewed as "loss of exergy" of the system, which also leads to accelerated wear in the form of oxidation, corrosion, and scuffing. This has a direct impact on the performance of the components or the machinery. If the sliding interface is also conducting electric current then the physics at the interface becomes complicated. The presence of electrical current leads to Joule heat generation at the interface along with other effects like electromotive, electroplasticity, stress relaxation and creep. The interface of an electrical contact, either stationary or dynamic, is a complex environment as several different physical phenomena can occur simultaneously at different scales of observations. The main motivation for this work stems from the need to provide means for accurate determination or prediction of the critical contact parameters viz., temperature and contact resistance. Understanding the behavior of electrical contacts both static and dynamic under various operating conditions can provide new insights into the behavior of the interface. This dissertation covers three major topics: (1) temperature rise at the interface of sliding bodies, (2) study on static electrical contacts, and (3) study of factors influencing behavior of sliding electrical contacts under high current densities.

Joint endoprosthetics - the science of implanting artificial joints into the human body - has been around since the 1960's, and consistent advancements are leading to better practice, materials and mechanics. The present book is devoted to the biophysics and effect of wear, friction and lubrication on artificial joints. The important aspects of biocompatibility and wear resistance are reviewed and a retrospective analysis of modern joint endoprosthetic designs is presented. Data on clinical aspects of endoprosthetics are cited in support of the text. Advancements in genetic engineering, and promising new techniques of designing bone and cartilage transplants are explored, and a critical comparison between tribological mechanisms of operation and natural joint functioning are made. An exceptional resource for all specialists in orthopedy, biophysics, immunology and engineers engaged in developing artificial joints.
