TRAVANCORE STATE MANUAL was written in the closing years of the 1800s. It is a fascinating book in that the perspective of historical events that took place in the region known as the Indian Peninsula is markedly different from what is being taught in current day schools and colleges. There is need to bring this book out in a very readable form. That is what has been attempted here. TRAVANCORE STATE MANUAL was written by V NAGAM IYYA on the express command of the sovereign of Travancore kingdom that he should create an official manual of the kingdom, which was similar to the District Manuals of the Madras Presidency. The book that V Nagam Iyya created is a very huge one, spanning across a lot of interconnected and un-connected themes of Travancore, Cochin, Malabar, the neighbouring kingdoms, English East India Company, South Asia &c.This commentary goes beyond what has been explicitly mentioned in the book, and tries to search out other more deeper information connected to the social mentality of the kingdom, in its varied social layers. This commentary can be interesting to persons who might want to know and ponder upon ideas and information, which stand clearly apart from ubiquitous sterile jingoistic chatter.

The Travancore State Manual is a huge book, not only on the antiquity of Travancore, but also of various other features of the place. It is not just a book on the history of the place. This book is Part 1 of Volume of One. This edition has two parts for Volume One. From the perspective of modern Indian history and sociology writings, this book has the disturbing feature that it is written in a sort of impartial and non-jingoistic manner. In fact, the detailing is so honest, that not many modern Travancorians would actually like to recommend this book to anyone for a detailed reading. The next item of jingoistic reproach would be the very obvious support to the English colonial rule. This feature can be felt in many pages dealing with the English colonial times in the subcontinent. Please note that the text and images used in this book are from various scanned versions of the original book. So there can be various kinds of deficiencies including text errors, and low quality images. These errors are expected to be very minimal. This edition is an improvement on the earlier editions brought out by VICTORIA INSTITUTIONS. In that, a lot of typos have been removed. However, no guarantee with regard to absolute accuracy can be assured.
