The Traumatic Event Crisis Intervention Plan (TECIP(c)), the flagship program of Crisis Oriented Planning and Educational Services, LLC., is a field tested school-based framework designed to meet the emotional and psychological needs of students and staff in the AFTERMATH of a traumatic event.

Motivation is key to substance use behavior change. Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.

Safe, Supportive, and Successful Schools Step by Step is a "cookbook" for planning and funding three levels of school improvement: (1) schoolwide programs focusing on the social, ethical, and emotional development of ALL students; (2) early interventions for SOME students who have minor behavioral problems; and (3) intensive interventions for those FEW students who experience signficant emotional and behavioral disorders. The Step by Step kit includes a CD-ROM with vital components of the program: Early Warning, Timely Response guide (in Spanish and English); Action Guide (in Spanish and English); and Promising Practices for Safe and Effective Schools video.

This timely Handbook is based on the principle that disasters are social constructions and focuses on social science disaster research. It provides an interdisciplinary approach to disasters with theoretical, methodological, and practical applications. Attention is given to conceptual issues dealing with the concept "disaster" and to methodological issues relating to research on disasters. These include Geographic Information Systems as a useful research tool and its implications for future research. This seminal work is the first interdisciplinary collection of disaster research as it stands now while outlining how the field will continue to grow.
