Cellular Immune Mechanisms and Tumor Dormancy features the work of internationally recognized experts from various disciplines as they discuss the phenomenon of tumor dormancy in humans. Animal models are described in which cellular and molecular components of the immune control of dormancy have been identified, and the relevance of these models to human cancer patients is recognized. Data derived from studies of organ transplantation, adjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy, anaesthesia, surgery, and whole blood transfusion is presented to show the vulnerability of cellular mechanisms maintaining dormancy. The potential for increasing the incidence of dormancy in micro metastases is also shown for non-small cell lung cancer, lymphoma, and leukemia. Cellular Immune Mechanisms and Tumor Dormancy is an important reference volume that will benefit researchers from many disciplines, including immunologists, pathologists, surgeons, and clinicians

These are the proceedings of the Third International Interdisciplinary Conference on Stress and Tension Control, sponsored by the International Stress and Tension-Control Society held at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland from August 30-September 3, 1988. The Society celebrated the 15th year of its existence. It was founded in 1974 as the American Association for the Advancement of Tension-Control which held annual meetings in Chicago through 1979. Recognizing the multi-national interest in stress and tension control, the association changed its name and scope accordingly. The original American Association was founded and nurtured for many years by Dr. and Mrs. Edmund Jacobson and Professor F. J. McGuigan. The proceedings of the first international conference in London were also published by Plenum Publishing Company (Stress and Tension Contral, McGuigan, Sime and Wallace, 1980), as were those of the second international conference which was held at the University of Sussex in Brighton, England (McGuigan, Sime and Wallace, 1984). These and the publication of the proceedings from 1974 reflect the interest in stress and tension control that has grown steadily throughout the past decades, as also does the publication of numerous other books related to Stress Management.

This innovative, comprehensive book covers the key elements of perioperative management of older patients. The book's chapter structure coincides with the clinical path patients tread during their treatment, from preoperative evaluation to post-hospital care. Epidemiological aspects and aging processes are illustrated, providing keys to understanding the quick expansion of geriatric surgery and defining the clinical profile of older surgical patients in a cybernetic perspective. Preoperative evaluation and preparation for surgery, including medication reconciliation and pre-habilitation, are developed in the light of supporting decision-making about surgery in an evidence-based and patient-focused way. Intra- and postoperative management are discussed, aiming to tailor anesthetic, surgical and nursing approaches to specific patients' needs, in order to prevent both general and age-related complications. This volume also addresses issues relevant to geriatric surgery, from different organizational models to clinical risk management and systems engineering applied to hospital organization.
