Under this system the major part of the grain assembled at country elevators scattered at many hundreds of points throughout the grain-producing areas was funneled into a very small number of central or terminal markets for inspection and grading, sale, storage, and processing by mills at those points. The grain, other than what was processed at these terminals, ultimately moved by railroad to other markets or mills or to ocean ports for export.
