This book explores ways in which libraries can reach new levels of service, quality, and efficiency while minimizing cost by collaborating in acquisitions. In consortial acquisitions, a number of libraries work together, usually in an existing library consortia, to leverage size to support acquisitions in each individual library. In cross-functional acquisitions, acquisitions collaborates to support other library functions. For the library acquisitions manager, technical services manager, or the library director, awareness of different options for effective consortial and cross-functional acquisitions allows for the optimization of staff and resources to reach goals. This work presents those options in the form of case studies as well as useful analysis of the benefits and challenges of each. By supporting each other’s acquisitions services in a consortium, libraries leverage size to get better prices, and share systems and expertise to maximize resources while minimizing costs. Within libraries, the acquisitions function can be combined with other library functions in a unit with more than one purpose, or acquisitions can develop a close working relationship with another unit to support their work. This book surveys practice at different libraries and at different library consortia, and presents a detailed description and analysis of a variety of practices for how acquisitions units support each other within a consortium, and how they work with other library units, specifically collection management, cataloging, interlibrary loan, and the digital repository, in the form of case studies. A final section of the book covers fundamentals of collaboration.

Through the perspectives of interlibrary loan (ILL) specialists, this book examines what ILL departments are doing, the value of ILL librarians in the evolving library environment, and how library collections and services are being affected by new ILL policies. In today's libraries, ILL specialists are facilitating service that goes far beyond traditional borrowing and lending. Recent innovations in interlibrary loan and library resource-sharing practices have advanced the information-sharing mission of libraries—a sea change that affects and benefits all library operations and staff. In recent years, acquisitions and collection management at the University of South Florida (USF) Library was operating with uncertain budgets, downsizing staff, and suffered a loss of institutional knowledge and skillsets. The dynamic research and learning environment at USF was characterized by growing patron needs for diverse electronic resources. In response, library administrators implemented a strategy of organizing technical services staff into a community of practice with three key elements. The three elements included redefining job descriptions, creating new operational workflows and building new work areas. This poster illustrates how the collections department at USF was re-cast by modifying staff organization and associated work spaces into collaborative teams. The team approach has focused skills sets on multi-format collection problem solving and enhanced service delivery to library patrons. The re-organization has transformed a department previously centered on processing print publications to a department focused on managing diverse activities including evidence-based acquisitions programs in both e-book and streaming formats as well as diverse e-journal and database subscriptions. Poster session attendees will learn strategies on how to re-frame academic library technical service staff organizations and associated operations during times of change. The information also contributes to the body of research in library space planning by presenting operational aspects of academic libraries often only occasionally portrayed in the scholarly literature, yet integral to library wide collaborative efforts in offering services and facilitating collections.

For over a decade, some academic libraries have been purchasing, rather than borrowing, recently published books requested by their patrons through interlibrary loan. These books had one circulation guaranteed and so appealed to librarians who were concerned about the large percentage of books selected and purchased by librarians but never checked out by their patrons. Early assessments of the projects indicated that patrons selected quality books that in many cases were cross disciplinary and covered emerging areas of scholarly interest. However, now we have a significant database of the ILL purchase records to compare these titles with books selected through normal methods. The projects described in this book present a powerful argument for involving patrons in the book selection process. This book looks at patron-driven acquisitions for printed books at Purdue University, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Illinois, as well as exploring new programs that allow patrons to select e-books or participate in other innovative ways in building the library collections.
