This is the sixth in a series of annual workshops designed to produce economic analysis and information on Mexico/United States/Canada trade and policy issues in the agricultural/agri-food industries. Held in San Diego, CA and attended by academic and government economists, and industry and interest group representatives. This publication consists of the papers and discussion comments presented. It is intended for readers with a general interest in the North American agricultural and food sector and effects of trade agreements on markets and trade. The material is also intended to be relevant to decision makers at all levels of the food chain to inform on economic relationships and market reality as a means to reducing trade and policy stress.

Agricultural trade is a major factor determining food security in Caribbean countries. In these small open economies, exports are essential, whilst imports provide a large part of the food supply. This book examines various dimensions of trade policy and related issues and suggests policies to address trade and food security and rural development linkages. Analyzing the experience of Mexico under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), 'Lessons from NAFTA' aims to provide guidance to Latin American and Caribbean countries considering free trade agreements with the United States. The authors conclude that the treaty raised external trade and foreign investment inflows and had a modest effect on Mexico's average income per person. It is likely that the treaty also helped achieve a modest reduction in poverty and an improvement in job quality. This book will be of interest to scholars and policymakers interested in international trade and development.
