Would Yong Da be able to embrace this land of freedom and reside permanently on foreign soil? In 2004, nearly three years after his wife passed away, Yong Da, the author's father embarked upon the journey of his life to America. Aged and broken-hearted, he was looking for a new beginning. This humorous, moving, and rich memoir is about the author's efforts to help her dad to fit into a new environment and to re-establish their relationship. It focuses on ordinary, but profound experiences that a father and a daughter shared, reflecting upon their personal values, perspectives, and priorities during a five-year period and offers the reader insight into the life and struggle of a contemporary immigrant family. Tracing Our Footsteps: Fifteen Tales of Hope, Struggle, and Triumph is truly remarkable - a story of a journey shared regardless of age, race, gender or cultural backgrounds....

The Hindu-Arabic numeral system (1, 2, 3, ...) is one of mankind's greatest achievements and one of its most commonly used inventions. How did it originate? Those who have written about the numeral system have hypothesized that it originated in India; however, there is little evidence to support this claim. This book provides considerable evidence to show that the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, despite its commonly accepted name, has its origins in the Chinese rod numeral system. This system was widely used in China from antiquity till the 16th century. It was used by officials, astronomers, traders and others to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and other arithmetic operations, and also used by mathematicians to develop arithmetic and algebra. Based on this system, numerous mathematical treatises were written. Sun Zi suanjing (The Mathematical Classic of Sun Zi), written around 400 A.D., is the earliest existing work to have a description of the rod numerals and their operations. With this treatise as a central reference, the first part of the book discusses the development of arithmetic and the beginnings of algebra in ancient China and, on the basis of this knowledge, advances the thesis that the Hindu-Arabic numeral system has its origins in the rod numeral system. Part Two gives a complete translation of Sun Zi suanjing. In this revised edition, Lam Lay Yong has included an edited text of her plenary lecture entitled "Ancient Chinese Mathematics and Its Influence on World Mathematics", which was delivered at the International Congress of Mathematicians, Beijing 2002, after she received the prestigious Kenneth O. May Medal conferred by the International Commission on the History of Mathematics. This should serve as a useful and easy-to-comprehend introduction to the book.

It was that very, very cold night in December that would change my life. I was very young, yet even at five years old, I had always dreamed of attending college and receiving my degree. One obstacle stood in my way--poverty. We were dirt poor. I sadly watched constantly my illiterate father drown himself in alcohol. Not once did he ever have that father-to-son talk. Not once did he say to us that he loved or cared for us. Yet, on the other hand, God gave to us our hard-working Christian mother, a woman who was the opposite of our father, a woman who prayed to God every night, praying and showing just how much she truly loved her sons. Every day of my life, I often thought about where my footsteps would lead me. Here I was constantly surrounded by poverty, violence, and racism. Would I end up hanging on some street living in poverty or, worse, dead? That one question that constantly haunted me with every footstep I took was simply, "How would I survive in this world without my mother? How could I live without you?"
