In the 1600s, four Tompkins brothers settled in Virginia. Three of the brothers eventually moved to New York, but the fourth brother, Humphrey Tompkins (d.1679) settled in Virginia. He married Hannah Bennett and they became the parents of nine children. Descendants settled in Virginia, Missouri, Illinois, Oregon and other parts of the United States.

This is a collection of genealogical data from important name lists for Colonial Surry, which once encompassed almost the entire southern part of the state of Virginia (i.e., fourteen present-day Virginia counties).
