In 2147 earth has mastered intergalactic travel settling many new planets. Factions on Earth are battling over whether these new planets will be colonies subordinate to Earth or a commonwealth of planets. One of the new planets, Gaiea, is wildly beautiful with tremendous resources. It also has a revolutionary new fuel source that could change the relationship between Earth and the planets. Colonialism supporters send Colonel Hunter Arnold to Gaiea to discourage settlement. Colonel Arnold, known throughout the galaxy as a ruthless autocrat, will do anything to keep the fuel for Earth, including destroying Gaiea’s pristine environment. He’s a dangerous man. Our hero, Tom Pike, infiltrates Arnold’s team and awaits the arrival of his father, John Carswell. He also works to keep Colonel Arnold from destroying the settlers and the planet. I’m sure readers will want to know what happens with Tom and Susa Stark, Captain Carswell’s second in command. Captain John Carswell of the commonwealth group is transporting colonists to settle Gaiea. His biggest fear is that Arnold will discover that Tom is his son. The story develops around this father/son relationship and tells how Gaiea is saved for all humanity.

Acclaimed author Fred Saberhagen continues his widely popular and influential Berserker(r) Series, a chronicle of a war between humanity and the terrifying race of sentient machines bent on death and destruction. Pilot Harry Silver's name is known throughout the galaxy-and that notoriety does not always work in his favor. While he has defeated his share of Berserkers, he has also stolen a powerful weapon from the Space Force, making him a fugitive from the life he once knew. Looking for an adventure, and not one to turn down a lot of cash, Harry agrees to bring a passenger aboard his ship, Lily, a woman who is on a quest to retrieve her husband. It won't be easy, as Lily's husband has joined a secretive religious cult on Maracanda, an almost-planet lodged between a shifting black hole and a neutron star. While the landscape of Maracanda is treacherous, so, too, may be the people around Harry Silver. As the search for Lily's husband deepens, Harry finds himself investigating a larger mystery and looking for missing person, almost ending up one himself. And as always, there is the threat of death from above, in the path of a machine whose only intent is to kill. . . .

Winner of the 2005 New Jersey Author Award for Scholarly Non-Fiction from the New Jersey Studies Academic Alliance Long before Bruce Springsteen picked up a guitar; before Danny DeVito drove a taxi; before Jack Nicholson flew over the cuckoo's nest, Asbury Park was a seashore Shangri-La filled with shimmering odes to civic greatness, world-renowned baby parades, temples of retail, and atmospheric movie palaces. It was a magnet for tourists, a summer vacation mecca-to some degree New Jersey's own Coney Island. In Asbury Park's Glory Days, award-winning author Helen-Chantal Pike chronicles the city's heyday-the ninety-year period between 1890 and 1980. Pike illuminates the historical conditions contributing to the town's cycle of booms and recessions. She investigates the factors that influenced these peaks, such as location, lodging, dining, nightlife, merchandising, and immigration, and how and why millions of people spent their leisure time within this one-square-mile boundary on the northern coast of the state. Pike also includes an epilogue describing recent attempts to resurrect this once-vibrant city.
