It is a strange phenomenon. When someone leads public prayer, many begin to have a truckload of ideas flood their minds and pour out of their mouths that take them across the landscape, from Ziklag to Kadesh. Others freeze and can barely get a request to come out, especially a petition that makes any intelligible sense. One remedy for roaming and rambling or stammering and stumbling is to type out public prayers. Whether leading a congregation in a corporate confession of sin, or a communal series of prayers, it helps to know there is a thought-out beginning, middle, and an end. This little book is a compilation of a number of prayers for such occasions. This volume hopes to give praying people examples and tools to aid in both private and public prayers. It is also for ministers who would like samples of how to lead public prayers. These prayers are set up to cover either 31 days or 31 weeks. Michael W. Philliber is a twenty-year active duty Air Force veteran (1979-1999). Two years after he retired from the service, he graduated from Reformed Theological Seminary and was ordained in 2001 in the Presbyterian Church in America. He has been Senior Pastor of Heritage Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Oklahoma City since 2016. He is the author of Gnostic Trends in the Local Church and a prolific book reviewer. He has posted over 350 book reviews on his blog, mphilliber.blogspot.com.

A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.
