Innovation-making is a classic theme in anthropology that reveals how people fine-tune their ontologies, live in the world and conceive of it as they do. This ethnographic study is an entrance into the world of Buryat Mongol divination, where a group of cursed shamans undertake the 'race against time' to produce innovative remedies that will improve their fallen fortunes at an unconventional pace. Drawing on parallels between social anthropology and chaos theory, the author gives an in-depth account of how Buryat shamans and their notion of fortune operate as 'strange attractors' who propagate the ongoing process of innovation-making. With its view into this long-term 'cursing war' between two shamanic factions in a rural Mongolian district, and the comparative findings on cursing in rural China, this book is a needed resource for anyone with an interest in the anthropology of religion, shamanism, witchcraft and genealogical change. Katherine Swancutt is a Research Fellow in Social Anthropology at the University of Oxford. She has carried out fieldwork on shamanic religion across Inner Asia, working among Buryats in northeast Mongolia and China since 1999, and among the Nuosu of Southwest China since 2007.

Covering everything from Abba to Zwingli, The Thiselton Companion to Christian Theology offers a comprehensive account of a wide sweep of topics and thinkers in Christian theology. Written entirely by eminent scholar Anthony Thiselton, the book features a coherence lacking in most multiauthored volumes. Drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge, gained from fifty-plus years of study and teaching, Thiselton provides some six hundred articles on various aspects of theology throughout the centuries. The entries comprise both short descriptive surveys and longer essays of original assessment on central theological topics -- such as atonement, Christology, God, and Holy Spirit -- and on such theologians as Aquinas, Augustine, Barth, Calvin, Kng, Luther, Moltmann, and Pannenberg. The book also includes a helpful time chart dating all of the theologians discussed and highlighting key events in Christian history; select reading suggestions conclude each of the longer entries. Equally valuable for research and teaching, The Thiselton Companion to Christian Theology will be a go-to reference for pastors, students, teachers, and theologians everywhere.

My sister was magic. They killed her. They say we are magic too. Three sisters living together in their forties has its challenges. Life is humming along just fine if you overlook our clashing personalities, codependency issues and romances that fizzle out before they ignite. When our oldest sister’s personality changes overnight, we plan a boozy lunch to chase away the midlife blues. We find her in our kitchen, battling a troop of men dressed like Indian royalty. Sitara summons a tempest from the washing-up bowl to protect herself. But it’s not enough to save her life. There’s no time to work out if magic is real. Her killers whisk us away to a hidden kingdom ruled by a seductive raja. Here, we must prove we’re not witches. I may be from a sleepy English coastal town, but I can hold my own. I flirt with danger, hell-bent on uncovering the truth of my sister’s death. Will I find out what lurks beneath the golden silks and exotic colours of our kidnapper’s home before I lose another sister to this perilous, new world?
