(Cont.) This enhancement is based on phase coherent detection allowing the separation of multiple scattered light from the ballistic second harmonic signal. We have implemented interferometric second harmonic microscopy in epi-imaging mode and demonstrated coherent imaging of non-linear optical crystals.

Last year we launched Volume 1 of the Reviews in Fluorescence series. The volume was well-received by the fluorescence community, with many e-mails and letters providing valuable feedback, we subsequently thank you all for your continued support. After the volume was published we were most pleased to learn that the volume is to be citable and indexed, appearing on the ISI database. Subsequently, as well as the series having an impact number in due course, individual chapters will appear on the database and be both citable and keyword searchable. We feel that this will be a powerful resource to both authors and readers, further disseminating leading-edge fluorescence based material. Our intention with this new series is to both disseminate and archive the most recent developments in both past and emerging fluorescence based disciplines. While all chapters are invited, we welcome and indeed encourage the fluorescence community to suggest areas of interest that they feel need to be covered by the series. In this new volume. Reviews in Fluorescence 2005, Volume 2, we have invited reviews in areas such as: Multi-dimensional Time-correlated Single Photon Counting; Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy; RNA folding; Lanthanide Probes and Fluorescent Biosensors to name but just a few. We hope you find this volume a useful resource and we look forward to receiving any suggestions you may have. Finally we would like to thank the authors for their timely articles, Caroleann Aitken for the fi-ont cover design, Kadir Asian for typesetting and Mary Rosenfeld for administrative support.

Melding basic and clinical science, this reference provides a comprehensive overview of the roles that biophysics, photochemistry, and computational modeling play in the biomedical applications of fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging. Penned by pioneering researchers, the Handbook of Biomedical Fluorescence discusses fundamental aspects of fluorescence generation in organic molecules within tissue, theoretical and experimental views of how light propagation in tissue can be used to interpret fluorescence signals, endogenous and exogenous fluorescence agents in medical or basic research studies, and radiation transport, diffusion theory, and the Monte Carlo method.

This book focuses on polarization microscopy, a powerful optical tool used to study anisotropic properties in biomolecules, and its enormous potential to improve diagnostic tools for various biomedical research. The interaction of polarized light with normal and abnormal regions of tissue reveals structural information associated with its pathological condition. Diagnosis using conventional microscopy can be time-consuming, as pathologists require an hour to freeze and stain tissue slices from suspected patients. In comparison, polarization microscopy more quickly distinguishes abnormal tissue and provides better microstructural information of samples, even in the absence of staining. This book provides a basic understanding of the properties of polarized light, a description of the polarization microscope, and a mathematical formalism of Mueller matrix polarimetry. The authors discuss various advanced linear and nonlinear optical techniques such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), reflectance and transmission spectroscopy, fluorescence, multiphoton excitation, second harmonic generation, Raman microscopy, and more. They explore the exciting potential of integrating polarimetry with these techniques for possible applications in different areas of biomedical research, as well as the associated challenges. Including the most recent developments on the topic, this book serves as a modern guide to polarization microscopy and advancements in its use in biomedical research.
