Teachers, in the classroom, at home, or online, are asked to provide quality instruction around the Science of Reading and develop early literacy foundational abilities incorporating phonemic awareness, phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension strategies. His notes about his own tinkering tell how his family, friends and his environment encouraged and enabled him to tinker from his earliest days and onward through his working life. He describes the principles and practices that he and other tinkerers follow to ensure success. The notes include stories about all types of tinkerers, amateurs and professionals, boys and girls, men and women -- people who tinker alone or in teams. Tinkerers work (or play) with the objects around them. Some tinker when they have to fix something on their own. Some tinker by rearranging things for enjoyment, trying to make them work better, (e.g., recipes, computer apps, or model train sets). Others tinker with things to understand how they work and see what else they might be able to do with "just a little bit of tinkering." One, to invent something to solve an annoying cell phone problem. There is another where team tinkering was required and was very effective. It also introduces the theme of magic as Tinker begins his reluctant evolution into a magician with an exorcism. This one is for Vincent fans. Other characters follow. In Hard Iain a warrior Pict ancestor vectors into Tinker via a miscegenated motorcycle, precipitating a fiery immolation. Death, in the unlikely form of a young girl, thumbs a lift from Tinker in Free Ride and him to introduces Anarch, the irascible personification of Freedom. Problems with law and order follow, plus a gifting that effectively ensures a hands-off with Death. Iain resurfaces in Pictoglyph to tell the tale of his heroic demise, set Tinker a heavy task, and leave his mark.
