The results of numerous national and international assessments have raised concerns regarding secondary mathematics education in the United States. According to government reports, there has been a significant increase in the use of technology in U.S. schools in the last decade. However, student achievement in mathematics has not improved during this time. A qualitative case study involved observing and interviewing two high school mathematics teachers and 48 high school students in three Advanced Placement (AP) mathematics classes. The study focused on what students and teachers thought about the integration of technology in mathematics education, on how they actually used technology in class, on whether technology helped students to learn cooperatively, and on whether technology helped teachers improve their instruction. Collective results from questionnaire data, interview data, and class observations helped to build an understanding about how technology was used in the three secondary mathematics classrooms.

Math education is catching up on technology, as courses and materials use digital sources and resources more and more. The time has come to evaluate this new dynamic, which transcends all previous use of ancillary devices to supplement classroom math instruction. Interactivity and interconnectivity with the online world of math and math texts (such as television programs and internet sites) can be integrated with our traditional modes for delivery of math instruction. This book looks at how this integration can unfold practically by applying these relevant pedagogical principles to elementary topics such as numeration, arithmetic, algebra, story problems, combinatorics, and basic probability theory. The book further exemplifies how mathematics can be connected to topics in popular culture, information technologies, and other such domains.

Mathematics Education with Digital Technology examines ways in which widely available digital technologies can be used to benefit the teaching and learning of mathematics. The contributors offer their insights to locate the value of digital technology for mathematics learning within the context of evidence from documented practice, prior research and of educational policy making. Key pedagogical uses of digital technologies are evaluated in relation to effective mathematics learning and practical ideas for teaching and learning mathematics with digital technology are critically analysed.
