"This dissertation consists of three essays focusing on party competition in parliamentary democracies. In the first chapter, I provide an introduction to the topics covered in this dissertation. In the second chapter, I propose that parties manipulate issue salience to highlight not only issues on which they are perceived to be particularly competent, but also issues on which they are positioned far away from their main competitors. I use my theoretical proposition to explain the results of the 2005 election in Poland. In the third chapter, I offer a new approach to party competition by pointing out that parties with non-overlapping electorates are not intense competitors even if they are ideologically close to each other. I argue that parties perceive political entities that are popular among similar types of voters as their close competitors. In this analysis, I propose a measure of the degree to which the electorates of any two parties are overlapping. I show that the degree to which the electorates of parties are overlapping affects party behavior in the coalition formation process. In the fourth chapter of my dissertation, I analyze the competition in regional elections in Central Europe, focusing on how parties that are in the national level of government perform in regional elections, and to what extent their performance depends on voters' perceptions of national government performance. I show that the performance of national government parties in regional elections differs between countries and I offer explanations for these differences. This edited collection, in honour of the late political scientist Peter Mair, contains original chapters that are directly linked to his theoretical and/or methodological ideas and approaches. Peter Mair demonstrated that political parties have traditionally been central actors in European politics and an essential focus of comparative European political science. Though the nature of political parties and the manner in which they operate has been subject to significant change in recent decades, parties remain a crucial factor in the working of European liberal democracies. This volume analyses recent developments and current challenges that European parties, party systems and democracy face. Each country examination provides significant data relating to party rules and norms of leadership selection, leadership tenures and leadership contests. The book concludes with a chapter that merges the country data analyses to provide a truly comparative examination of the theoretical questions underlying the volume. How popular democracy has paradoxically eroded trust in political systems worldwide, and how to restore confidence in democratic politics In recent decades, democracies across the world have adopted measures to increase popular involvement in political decisions. Parties have turned to primaries and local caucuses to select candidates; ballot initiatives and referenda allow citizens to enact laws directly; many places now use proportional representation, encouraging smaller, more specific parties rather than two dominant ones.Yet voters keep getting angrier.There is a steady erosion of trust in politicians, parties, and democratic institutions, culminating most recently in major populist victories in the United States, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere. Frances Rosenbluth and Ian Shapiro argue that devolving power to the grass roots is part of the problem. Efforts to decentralize political decision-making have made governments and especially political parties less effective and less able to address constituents’ long-term interests. They argue that to restore confidence in governance, we must restructure our political systems to restore power to the core institution of representative democracy: the political party.
