Forwards a letter for Mr. Lewis (not included). Notes he received a letter from William Knox regarding business affairs. Provides an extract from William's letter that deals with a bill involving Mr. Freeman and Mssrs Webber & Bicknell.

Congratulates Knox on the birth of his daughter, which took place on 8 July. Says he might need discounts at the Bank of Philadelphia in the course of his future business. Asks Knox if he will accept my bill on you at forty five or sixty days sight. Explains that the money will be given to Knox in time to pay the bill, and that the bill will be drawn by Mr. McConnell. Says he wants access to an extension of credit to answer Mercantile Speculations, which I apprehend I can make to profit for these few months to come. Postscript says he enclosed letter from Mrs. Randall is for Lucy Knox (not included). Stamped FREE on verso. Knox answers Randall's letter on 21 July 1791 (GLC02437.05077).

Writes that he met Colonel Smith [William Stephens Smith] at the Post Office, who informed him that he would be going to Philadelphia to see Knox within the course of a month. Discusses payment of a bill of Knox's brother William; Randall will apparently take the money and pay it off to Colonel Smith. Mentions several other business concerns. Free stamped on address leaf with no signature.

Randall requests of Knox the remaining four thousand dollars on the 25th instant, April 1791. Randall also says that he is extremely sorry for the non acceptance and payment of your brothers bill. Encloses a letter (not present) and asks Knox to present it to his brother, William.

Does not know why Colonel [William Stephens] Smith has not called on [Randall] for the acceptance, but hopes Randall will let Knox know when he finds out. Discusses making arrangements for paying his brother William's bills, and other financial issues.
